The second route, unfortunately, feels almost extraneous. Without fondness for Tamamo no Mae from the previous games, her story feels too much like repetition of Nero’s route, while the third route is when the story truly breaks away from that formula. There are also side stories for the allied characters, which show you alternate versions of events and give you a chance to use different gameplay styles.

Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star is a decent hack-and-slash with a solid character upgrade system. If you are a fan of the FATE series, then you will most likely enjoy this game. If you don't know anything about it, however, then you might want to check a couple videos out before purchasing the game.

All in all, Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star makes for an entertaining hack and slash experience which feels right at home on the Nintendo Switch. It’s admittedly a little pricey at £49.99, but for those looking for some Dynasty Warriors style action, it fits the bill quite nicely, and those familiar with the Fate franchise will also get a kick out of its story which features many familiar faces. As per the norm for these types of games though, repetition is bound to turn off some players relatively quickly, so be aware.

Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star’s storyline and combat make it a great title for fans of the Fate franchise but even for a Musou title the repetitive nature and monotonous feel of standard enemies and stages wears the joy down quickly, leaving it as a title that is best played in small bursts.

I can’t score this game in a vacuum, though. As such, the game as a whole is fairly average. If you’re a fan of the Fate franchise or the musou genre, this title is definitely worth a look. To the general gaming public, I’d say to rent it first and see if it holds up for you before purchasing.

Fate/Extella will be a hard sell for most fans of the franchise. If you come into this expecting a setting, cast or narrative similar to any of the anime, you might be left disappointed and confused. It’s still a fun, addictive game with the flashy combat you’d expect from a Warriors-style game, but you might have to tune out the story in order to enjoy it. In a franchise where story is so key, that’s a huge bummer.

Hacking and slashing away at hundreds of enemies who rarely have the courage to actually fight back has provided hours of mindless fun over the years. However, does Fate/Extella have what it takes to stand out in such a crowded genre?

At its core, Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star is Dynasty Warriors set in cyber space. Three factions battle it out to decide who rules the brightly coloured digital world, and each army is spearheaded by anime-style representations of mythical and historical figures. You'll see legendary Chinese general Lu Bu clashing with Joan of Arc while Greek genius Archimedes fills in as Roman emperor Nero's strategist. Nero's a blonde-haired young woman in a frilly dress, by the way.

Type-Moon’s Fate series has become a recent phenomenon across both animation and video games. Historical (and fantasy) heroes of old are brought together to fight each other to the death over a supernatural force known as the Holy Grail. Through its many renditions in video game form, the series began as a visual novel and was transformed into mobile games, role-playing games, and its most recent rendition, an action title in the same vein as Dynasty Warriors. Following up the PSP-exclusive Fate Extra title, Type-Moon and Xseed’s newest entry in the Fate universe, Fate Extella: The Umbral Star brings that...

Caught between a rock and a hard place, Fate/Extella’s fundamentals are solid and fans will certainly love it, but newcomers to the Fate series should beware.
