Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
I also had the opportunity to test the game on the Wii U, and it’s functionally the same although it’s clearly not optimsed as well. There’s some frame rate issues and the odd graphical glitch that I didn’t notice in my PS3 playthrough. Not enough to affect the overall quality of the game, but it’s disappointing that more care wasn’t put into the port.
Sequels are generally a straight forward affair – or at least they have been this generation. Ideally, a sequel should remove or fix problems that plagued the first game, while adding new, polished content and improving core gameplay. With Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2, developer Koei’s job should have been a simple one, given that the first game was less than stellar.
The graphics look incredibly dated and the effects aren’t even that interesting to look at; when you’ve seen Kenshiro rapidly kick or punch a bunch of guys it starts to get old after the hundredth time. The bloody legacy of Fist of the North Star could have yielded a satisfying, violent melee action game, but intrusive and uninteresting cut scenes, neutered enemies, and repetitious combat make Ken's Rage 2 an exercise in tedium instead. You cannot win against Kenshiro, so just do what his enemies should have, and avoid him.
With more time, money, and effort, Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 could have been an entertaining, if basic brawler. You hear the mantra of “good concept, poor execution” with nearly absurd frequency these days. Ken's Rage 2 doesn't just exhibit poor execution, but poor understanding of what it's attempting to accomplish. Simple does not have to mean shallow, but that's precisely what it boils down to here. It truly is a sad day when you start with a character known for punching people so hard they spontaneously explode, and you manage to end up with something that's not only bad, but b...
