Professional reviews from gaming critics
Gloomhaven isn’t just a game; it’s a monumental achievement in tabletop design. It delivers tactical brilliance, deep world-building, and near-endless replayability. It’s demanding, heavy, and often overwhelming – but for those who stick with it, it’s the gold standard of modern board gaming.
All in all Gloomhaven is still the game people either know and love, or the game that will welcome those looking for a dungeon crawler with open arms. Why then choose the digital version? Well there are many reasons to choose the digital version but I suppose some of the main reasons include ease of access and ease of use, and lest we forget an intuitively easy to use interface Gloomhaven the digital version is welcoming and makes getting together with friends or playing it alone easier. The classic dungeon-crawling tabletop adventure is very comfortable in its new digital home.
Gloomhaven takes the boardgame and turns every aspect of it digital.
Gloomhaven's gameplay is deeply challenging and dense, and it almost always manages to provide a satisfying payoff in equal measure if you are able to look past its menus and control flaws (and can stomach its load times on Switch). It isn't for the faint of heart, but those who stick with its complex, card-centric tactical gameplay will find a great strategy game.
As crushingly difficult as the game can be, the Gloomhaven Steam port is a great way to experience the game for the first time. It does something most board games can’t - it teaches you how to play without throwing you in the deep end or forcing you to read a manual three times. What’s so impressive about this version is how it adds exactly what it needs to make Gloomhaven a video game without losing anything that defines the board game. At a fraction of the cost of the physical version, this is an ideal way to experience Gloomhaven, either for the first time or for the hundredth.
Gloomhaven is the digital adaptation of the eponymous board game, including all the beloved aspects and adding new features. The battle system is great, but missions can become repetitive after a while.
Gloomhaven as a video game is a faithful recreation of the board game into the digital world. This is both commendable and detrimental. It is a good game, but there is also a reason no one sits around a table and plays by themselves and this is pretty much it.
