Granblue Fantasy: Versus

There’s a lot of room for Granblue Fantasy: Versus to grow from here. There are a lot more characters that can be brought into the game, and many more stories that can be told through that RPG mode. As it is, however, this is a remarkably beautiful and intelligently-structured fighting game, which does justice to the source material and offers a stunning foundation for what might come into the future. It also works as the perfect introduction to Granblue Fantasy for the west, and now Cygames should be left with no other choice than to release the mobile game worldwide.

Granblue Fantasy Versus is such an amazing fighting game. The mechanics are both intuitive and full of depth, making it a solid choice for both fighting game casuals and veterans. The visuals are gorgeous, with an animated aesthetic that allows it to stand out amongst the crowded genre. Its online features, although simple, are functional and allow you to really test out everything you've learned from its decent tutorial. Multiplayer works moderately well, though I had some lag issues here and there while facing off against other players online. If RPG Mode and multiplayer aren’t your thing, there are also various combo challenges for each character. It’s fairly standard stuff, but it’s fun enough and it serves as a good place to practice.

In fighting games you can’t easily pass the buck on who’s to blame for losing like in team-based games like Dota 2 and CSGO. If you lose in a fighting game it’s because you messed up. This is a potentially huge hurdle to overcome mentally before you even begin to approach how to play. And while Granblue Fantasy Versus isn’t necessarily going to help you over that hurdle, if you can get through it, the game does a great job of helping you understand how to get better.
