Grim Dawn

Crate Entertainment has finally released Grim Dawn, no small feat for an independent development studio that crowd-funded before crowd-funding was a big deal. With the game's release, fans of darkly themed ARPGs with deep levels of class customization and visceral combat tied to a great story have gotten at long last the "spiritual successor" to Diablo 2 that fans have been pining about for years.

Grim Dawn is one of the best action-RPGs out there, combining excellent hack and slash action with a world and progression curve that makes it worth fighting through. Alone or with friends, it’s hour after hour of top quality combat and looting, with the promise of many more excellent dark times to come.

What Grim Dawn does is make us focus on how ARPGs once were. It is not the fast-paced click-fest leaning towards accessibility that Diablo 3 is and neither is it the complex behemoth that Path of Exile has evolved into. It is a reminder. It is a worthy successor of Titan Quest and a game that, despite using tried-and-tested methods, will scratch the itch of those who cried in disappointment when Diablo 3 came out and not only them. Bloody. Depressing. Brutal. And just about perfect.

The creators of the magnificent Titan Quest certainly didn’t rush their next project, but after years of hard work, we have finally got it. Grim Down is a surprisingly good hack’n’slash, and a solid base for further growth.

Grim Dawn is a game that is more than the sum of its parts. Its graphics, story, and music are not particularly impressive, but its combat is so good that it elevates it over almost all of its contemporaries. This is a title that is worth it’s full price.

It'll keep you busy for a long damn time too, even if you only play it once - though, of course, for many there'll be later playthroughs in co-op or at unlockable higher difficulties. I think it's the (admittedly presumed) desire to be the spiritual sequel to Diablo II which holds me back from heaping breathless praise on Grim Dawn, though. The need to be grim first and foremost forbids a clear personality from shining through, and the result is that I'm not sure how to finish a sentence which begins "Grim Dawn is that game where..."

Crate Entertainment’s dedication and passion for the action role-playing genre certainly shows with the recently released Grim Dawn for the PC. Years of pedigree in the genre have culminated in a new title that takes the conventions of prior titles and mixes them fluidly with mechanics to create a project that feels familiar, yet undeniably fresh.
