Ground Zero Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

We really are living in a golden age for survival horror, as both major AAA series and indie entries are releasing at an almost dizzying frequency. Even a die-hard fan of the genre such as myself can barely keep up, and several recent games are still on my backlog. Despite this, Ground Zero stood out in previews and demos as a particularly exciting example and I’m happy to reveal that the full game more than meets my expectations. It isn’t an overstatement to say that it feels like a lost classic survival horror game, able to hold its own against the giants of the PS1 era.

If there’s one trend I’ve been loving lately, it’s the comeback of PS1-style horror games. There’s something special about those chunky, retro visuals paired with modern design sensibilities and quality of life improvements that just works. Games like Crow Country, Alisa, and Signalis have already proven how effective that mix can be, capturing the spirit of classic survival horror without feeling stuck in the past. And now, Ground Zero steps up to join that lineup.

Ground Zero is one of the most complete indie survival horror games I’ve run across in a long time. While it may come across as a Resident Evil clone, Ground Zero is more like a companion game than a mere clone. The game keeps itself fresh with its generous mix of combat, puzzles, extra modes, and unlockables. Ground Zero offers a lot of quality survival horror gameplay at an indie price.

Ground Zero is a bit of a weird one. On some levels, it works incredibly well, mostly in the nostalgic feel and wearing its inspirations on its sleeves. On the other hand, it sticks to them too much and doesn’t do anything interesting enough to stand out.

The evolution of survival horror, while varied, has ultimately always ended up at the same point. From the more action-focused spectacle to the first-person hide and seek. The genre is seemingly always in flux in one way or another. But no matter what, it also comes back to fixed camera angles and debates over tank controls.
