So far, Sony’s new PlayLink initiative hasn’t amounted to anything more than a decent selection of casual party games. Both Knowledge Is Power and That’s You follow the Jackbox Party Pack formula of wrapping up trivia questions within a fun and humorous setting, while SingStar: Celebration allows editor Sammy Barker to fulfil his wildest Taylor Swift fantasies.
Stories in games have come a long way in the past few years. Titles like Firewatch, Life is Strange, and Supermassive’s Until Dawn have pushed video game narratives away from bad action schlock, and towards the realm of the respectable.
There’s some good ideas in how PlayLink can be used to let a group of players (and non-gamers in particular) join together and shape a filmic story, but the actual interface feels clumsy, and the story and scripting leaves plenty to be desired. It’s safe to say that Hidden Agenda is an obvious disappointment.
The creators of Until Dawn got bored of murdering young adults in classic ‘slasher’ fashion and have moved on to the world of gripping detective fiction. Well, that’s the idea anyway.
