But there is an unexpected bright side to Hidden Dragon Legend. It’s obvious just from looking at the game that its developers really cared for it. Someone loved it and tried to elevate it from the cloying mediocrity of its bland and tepid gameplay with some really rather good art, menus and UI. The conceptual design of the game, it’s art and the supplemental features that never usually get talked about are, in this case, the stars of the show. The same can’t be said for the graphics, though, which are – you guessed it – mediocre at best.

Hidden Dragon Legend is a side-scrolling action platformer. Unfortunately, it isn't a particularly good one. While it certainly has its moments, the lack of polish and terrible writing ensures that this is one title that never lives up to its potential.

Hidden Dragon isn’t terrible, but it’s sorely stuck not one, but two generations in the past. The sidescroller is by no means dead, yet those working in this shrinking subgenre are either emulating its most celebrated champions or pushing the boundaries with something new and inventive. Hidden Dragon does neither, nor does it have the visual oomph that can often help overlook a game’s shortcomings.

In short, Hidden Dragon Legend requires a lot more polish. The basics are all there, but just about everything is implemented poorly and makes for a frustrating experience. The storytelling is lackluster and it manages to make combat, what should be the core of an action game, into something that toes the line between tedious and unfair. The game’s sole saving graces are the aesthetics and the early portions of the game when the combat still resembles a decent action game.

Hidden Dragon Legend has some brief moments of fun, but they're all lost in its terrible story, clumsy platforming, boring combat, and ugly graphics.
