Hood: Outlaws & Legends has a strong premise on paper and at times is fun and exciting, but its gameplay shortcomings mean that it never reaches its full potential.

I always appreciate when a developer announces a complete new take on a cooperative online game. There are few that stray away from the tested basic multiplayer components, so when something different comes along, it might be worth paying attention to. Hood: Outlaws and Legends is a 4v4 PvPvE game where two teams compete to steal a chest from a group of AI controlled enemies. Think Hunt: Showdown with a darker take on Robin Hood. Let’s see if the idea paid off in the end.

Hood: Outlaws and Legends brings players into an alternate universe where Robin Hood and his Merry Men are a gang of murderous thieves. While the core heist gameplay loop offers some fun for committed players, the structure around those heists doesn't give much reason (beyond getting better) to keep playing. The thematic darkness doesn't help; when the Sherriff of Nottingham drops f-bombs and smashes people's heads like pumpkins, I kinda tap out.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends could turn out to be a great game, an average one or something best forgotten. The launch content is fun but shallow, with limited replay value.

I remember Robin Hood being a charming animated fox but here's a game based on the legend that you don't want your kids to play.

Ever wanted guttural and tactical multiplayer action as Robin Hood’s merry band of bandits? Sumo Digital, the developers behind Crackdown 3 and Sackboy: A Big Adventure, are making those dreams come true with Hood: Outlaws & Legends. The studio has quite a variety of genres behind them and more than fifteen years of development history. With one of their studios located in Nottingham, England, it’s very fitting to have these talented people develop a fledgling Robin Hood game.

There’s a framework for a good multiplayer game here in Hood: Outlaws & Legends, but it needs tweaking and building upon to truly give it legs. A PvE mode that actually awards progression would be welcome, too. As it stands, the clunky close combat, somewhat unbalanced characters, and a single match type results in a game that doesn’t quite meet its potential. Despite its frustrations though, it’s at least fun to play – well, until the action starts to begin feeling repetitive, which doesn’t take all that long unfortunately.

The latest addition to the PvPvE stable is an accessible but chaotic one.

There's a great game inside of Hood: Outlaws & Legends. When it comes together properly, it's one of the most interesting titles I've seen in a while. As it is now though, there's not enough content available to truly show off its potential, and early adopters will be left waiting for it to grow into something truly exceptional.

As the old saying goes, brave sir Robin stole from the rich and gave to the poor. For his first video game venture on new consoles, Robin Hood himself isn't afraid to engage in a bit of larceny to redistribute the wealth from the State and instead give it to those in need. In Sumo Digital's latest multiplayer title, players will take up the mask of Robin's cause in Hood: Outlaws & Legends. Is Hood's take on PvPvE worth your coin, or is this one title that's robbing you of a good time?

Hood gives you glimpses of a new and exciting multiplayer concept, but its many, many design flaws keep the game from delivering.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends is a PvPvE heist game that puts you into the shoes of Robin Hood and his band of thieves — but the arrow misses the target.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends takes a unique 4v4 multiplayer premise and fails to do it justice. While the art style is cool and the concept is neat, the execution falls short with a lack of content, balancing issues, and a slew of frustrating elements.

This rings true during the early stages of a match, as you often spend several minutes simply trying to find the Sheriff with the key. The location of the Sheriff and the vault that contains the treasure are randomized each match, so exploring the levels needs to be more entertaining than it is. But the game misses the mark here.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends has several interesting concepts that, on paper, might seem refreshing for the genre. Unfortunately, clunky combat mechanics, questionable design choices, and a tedious gameplay loop lead to a rather monotonous experience.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends is a stealth-action game with an interesting PvPvE premise that leads to some exciting moments of chaos when your well-planned heist goes awry. Its downfall, however, is that its balance rewards hacking and slashing over stealth and planning. Even if you embrace that, there just aren’t enough maps to sustain the single mode for more than a handful of hours before things become repetitive.
