Infinity Runner

Infinity Runner does provide a few moments of intense fun. Unfortunately, those moments are broken up too often with gameplay choices that really bring the game (and the fun) to a screeching halt.

As endless runners go, Infinity Runner is a fine example, but greatly lacks polish and finesse. Repeated use of assets also leads to deja vu, and some parts of the game are just plain broken. The story too is deeply unsatisfying with its eye-rolling conclusion. But then for the price, you can't really go too far wrong. If nothing else, Infinity Runner offers a few hours of silly sci-fi entertainment. With space werewolves.

Run away.

Ironically, Infinity Runner is too short for what it is. The gameplay is as repetitive as you'd expect but the storyline and non-standard features alleviate that somewhat, to the point that it can be entertaining enough at times. If the prospect of an infinite runner puts you off though, there's little here that will change your mind, despite the developer's best efforts. Depending on your point of view, Infinity Runner could be a decent and cheap enough proposition for a quiet Sunday afternoon. Just don't expect it to last you into Sunday evening.

However, Infinity Runner has a certain appeal, even considering its faults. There's a sense of creativity that shines through here, from the game's atypical premise to its well-meaning attempts to integrate a compelling storyline into an endless runner. Anyone desperate to play this type of game on console will be pleased with the results. Beyond that, it's difficult to wholeheartedly recommend Infinity Runner — but it's certainly not without its merits.

There isn’t a lot to like here. Banal gameplay, cheap deaths, poor feedback, dull quick-time event combat, bad acting, worse writing, and an overall amateurish presentation. The most enjoyable part of this experience was venting to a colleague about how bad it is.

Infinity Runner is a strange beast. If this was a review of an iPad version then I would probably feel more favourable towards it but here, on the PC, a game as casual and potentially frustrating due to the nature of genre, feels out of place. Unless torturing your reflexive skills and muscle memory is a turn-on then Infinity Runner may be better left on the Steam shelf until it re-emerges onto a portable device. Infinity Runner is a really good addition to the runner genre, and at a price of £4.99 offers decent value for money due to the re-playability factor. You can try and beat your own scores to ascend the leaderboards, as well as tackle the game challenges such as completing the story without dying on hard. Infinity Runner is a good looking game with solid sound work, and it is fun to play. The motion controls aren’t the best and I wouldn’t recommend using them, while the stuttering on the loading screens also needs addressing.
