If you’re a longtime fan who’s been waiting for a game that’ll let you live out your Star Wars fantasies then the wait is far from over. Kinect Star Wars, with all its control and polish issues, has very limited appeal for an adult audience. Kids will likely find more enjoyment out of it, even the absurd dancing mode, but ultimately its more of a Star Wars-themed set of mediocre mini-games than the jedi epic fans are dying for.
Microsoft’s Kinect has been getting some love lately. I had the chance to review Kinect Rush last week, and now I have had the chance to review Kinect Star Wars. I was at E3 2010 when Microsoft announced Kinect’s final name, and at that presentation they showed video footage of Kinect Star Wars, much to the glee of many fans in the arena. Well, almost 22 months later, Kinect Star Wars has been released to the masses. So, the big question is: “Is this the Star Wars game you’re looking for?”
Kinect: Star Wars is a game that fails where we thought it would succeed, and succeeds where we thought it would fail. Pod Racing and Dancing offer the most fun players will likely have in the game, while the campaign is dull and uninspired - and suffers from terrible control issues. Some people may be able to have fun with the Kinect: Star Wars (especially families), but anyone hoping for a refined Kinect game in the vein of The Gunstringer or Child of Eden, that can appeal to casual and hardcore gamers, alike - it's better to pass on this one.
Hardcore Star Wars fans and savage dogs have a lot in common. They both rarely sleep, whenever they get a chance to show their teeth, they will, and they’re very rarely happy. If you’re a hardcore Star Wars fan, you’re going to want to look away now. Just know that this isn’t for you and pretend that you never even heard the words Kinect Star Wars uttered in the same sentence ever again. In fact, it’s not going to be for a lot of people, but we’ll press on anyway.
