Normally, a game trying so hard to be emotive like Koira does would make me wonder if it's using sentiment to cover for a lack of substance. Its delicate piano themes, the animal emphasis, the music swelling at just the right moments, and using a dog as its central point of attention – all these things seem tailored for easy emotional appeals, but Studio Tolima doesn't just want to make you protect a dog and smile at cute forest critters. The team uses these emotional connections to tell dozens of poignant little stories and give meaning to Koira's puzzles.

Koira is beautiful, with its exploration of hope and the harsh world around us. Its mystical setting and its focus on music as the gateway to harmony and peace is a pleasant package for a cozy night in. It doesn’t bend the genre but it doesn’t need to, with how it makes these very real issues more accessible to a younger audience with its simplistic gameplay and whimsical moments. I’ll never stop loving this little genre of indie games, with its big heart and aim to say something meanin...

Koira is a visually gorgeous and emotionally gripping experience with unique musical puzzles and a moving story. Despite its brief length, fans of casual, story-driven adventures will cherish the experience for its relaxing gameplay.

Koira is a short, sweet, and emotional game that feels a bit simple to play at times, but it is perfect for the Steam Deck!

While it does nothing wholly original, Koira achieves exactly what it sets out to do: tell an emotional tale and build a strong foundation for Studio Tolima’s future titles.

Koira lacks in-game substance as it offers little encouraged progression like collectibles or various ways to experience the journey more than once, which could otherwise make it one to remember… Still, the way the game embraces music as the language evokes emotion that players can build upon is introspective. This is where Koira succeeds.

Koira is a magical experience from beginning to end. While the simple story and gameplay mechanics may not appeal to everyone, the fact that the game manages to tell a charming yet heart-wrenching narrative without any dialogue is very impressive. Despite some bugs and a few instances of crashing, you should definitely play Koira, especially if you're looking for an adorable and calming adventure to play during the Spring season.

Video games are an ideal medium to hang out with virtual animal companions. You’ve got games entirely centered on beloved furry friends like Nintendogs and the Pokémon series, as well as recognisable characters like Dogmeat from Fallout (rest in peace, mo-cap dog River), bird dog Trico from The Last Guardian and, my personal recent favourite, the titular mystical wolf in last year’s Neva. Entering this pantheon of games that allow you to play alongside a beloved furry friend is Koira, a ...

Koira is an enchanting adventure that takes players on an emotional journey between the protagonist and their dog. Studio Tolima's hand-drawn visuals truly pull you in, while the mixture of reds, blacks and whites often makes for a dramatic picture. You can see the emotion of each character prominently through the animations, making you feel for the protagonist without a spoken word. Additionally, the musical elements with notes being uttered instead of words is a nice touch, bringing you back to the days of Ico.

Koira is a heartfelt and inspiring journey that explores the deep emotional bonds between people and animals, bonds that are dynamic and fulfilling for both. With expressive art and music, some interesting puzzles, and a bit of tension and excitement, Koira is less one dimensional than it might appear. As a game, it’s probably a one-and-done experience, but it leaves behind a warm glow and a bit of renewed appreciation for empathy, connection, and communication.

When a video game presents animals in a vulnerable position, it makes for a potentially devastating experience because players will always fear the worst. Koira aims to not only focus on the animals but present the human side of that story. The mystical power of the forest bonds with Koira, guiding hers and the puppy, and in return Koira bonds with it. The urge to protect those who are vulnerable is powerful, and players will be hard-pressed to complete Koira without having experienced an ove...

Tasking players with making their way through a magical, musical forest alongside a pup they've rescued, Koira is a charming adventure full of puzzles, mini-games and a little bit of danger. Though while it's enjoyable overall, its gameplay can feel a little too basic at times.
