LEGO Worlds is fun in small increments and I would be lying if I said this game does not hit the target audience’s expectations. If you like sandbox games with open-ended gameplay, or are looking for a decent Minecraft alternative, this game is for you; unfortunately there just was not enough substance in the aimless gameplay loop for me to keep me coming back.

This is a platform that Traveller’s Tales are looking to build on, and indeed have since its original launch on PC, and with continuing growth there’s the potential here for something essential for Lego enthusiasts. As it stands though, for all of the merit and freedom that Lego Worlds affords, it’s still bound by many of the same problems as its predecessors.

When LEGO finally announced they were creating a blocking building video game, the entire community wondered where they had been for the past six years. Minecraft, in case you hadn't heard, is a hugely popular block building game. It released about six years ago, and since then made literally all the money.

Golden bricks are an essential part of Lego Worlds, without them you can only go but so far. These bricks as mentioned earlier can be obtained by helping NPCs with a task. But that’s not the only way to obtain them, they can be found throughout worlds in chests, buried underground, there’s even little green creatures that will randomly pop up with them, which you must chase down and tackle to obtain their golden bricks. Without golden bricks, you’ll never be able to travel to the more distant larger worlds.

Although LEGO Worlds is a little rough around the edges and is definitely not a Minecraft killer, it's a delightful game that LEGO fans should look into.

Lego Worlds brings the open world building of Minecraft to a more creative place. As a fan of previous Lego games I wanted to see how well an open world sandbox building game would play out in the world of Lego, and the results are pretty interesting! There are some occasional bugs and glitches, and the controls can be frustrating, making the game a bit tedious to play at times. Although not without issues, Lego Worlds is fun and creative, combining the building with a storyline, offering a ton of customization abilities.

I think that Lego Worlds is best played with a friend and that this is not meant to be a game that should be played alone. It encourages you to explore the game together with people as the words on the screen flashes asking you to connect that second player. You can also join other player’s session online for some multiplayer fun. Overall, I was expecting the game that would provide the same wit and ingenuity that the other Lego games has given me. But when it comes down to it, when the game does not have a famous movie to parody, that’s when the game actually shows its weakness. That the game is nothing more than just a playground that you’d only want to come back to if you have a friend to play with. I’m hoping that the game would add more features in the future like adding their famous Lego franchise characters in the mix like the Lego Batman or Lego Jurassic Park. I think that would be something that would really draw me back to the game.

LEGO Worlds is commendable for its environmental diversity and the power of its creative tools to build anything you can dream of or manipulate every castle, hillside, and forest in sight. Unfortunately, fiddly menus, a pretty terrible combat system, and at times clunky and unfriendly construction controls weigh down on the wonder of finding and creating. Despite all this, I still find myself drawn back into it to discover what more the designers have hidden in the world-generation code, as coming across a massive ruined castle or an active volcano for the first time is always a treat - and an inspiration for what I want to build next.

A Lego version of Minecraft sounds too good to be true, and while this isn’t as versatile as Mojang’s classic it does offer a fun alternative for young builders.

Upon its release in 2011, Minecraft drew plenty of comparisons to LEGO. It was like playing with everyone's favourite Danish export – no, not him – but virtually, and without the damage to your bank account. Hell, LEGO even made Minecraft sets, so you could play your favourite virtual LEGO game in real life with LEGO.

When it comes to enjoyable laidback entertainment, nothing beats a Lego video game. Worlds may be the most open-ended Lego game yet so get ready to explore a galaxy full of blocky planets inhabited by helpful chums, cute critters, and dastardly foes.

Stupidly enjoyable and endlessly charming, LEGO Worlds is the gift that keeps on giving with different biomes – jungles, spooky forests, deserts, swamps, candy lands with gingerbread men and more - an adventure filled with quests and infinite scope to make whatever you want. LEGO Worlds is fantastic.
