Aside from that glaring miscue, Madden NFL 10 is a fantastic multiplayer game with fun new modes, refined controls, and simplified gameplay. You can compete in Madden Showdown mode, cooperate in Road to the Super Bowl, and terrorize in the Huddle Up mode. While you're still playing a regular old game of football, the variety of ways that you can play that game is grand and makes this a terrific title for casual football fans of any age.
On-field authenticity and emotion is taken to another level in Madden NFL 10. With more control over the outcome of the play than ever before, players can drag defenders towards the first down marker, fight for a fumble at the bottom of the pile, and avoid the rush by stepping up into the pocket.
It seems like Madden NFL 10 got a bit more attention than Madden NFL 09 as far as PS2 development goes. There certainly isn’t a bevy of new frills to entertain you, but the additions that are here help to push things forward ever so slightly. Forty dollars might be a bit much to ask, but there’s certainly enough Madden to keep you happy if the PS2 is your only option and you haven’t experience pro football in a few seasons. Otherwise I’d save the cash and spend it on a new console instead.
Now Superstar mode is a different story. It's funny how this mode has gotten worse since it changed generations. On the old PS2 games there were all kinds of things that made this mode fun. Participating in off-field activities like doing interviews or shooting movies gave the mode a unique feel and a little bit like a real NFL player. But now Superstar has become create a player, go through the calendar, work your way up the depth chart, become a star. Heck, the mode has been so stripped that now participating in practices don't even matter because you just run plays without ever being reward...
EA Tiburon has been producing Madden for over a decade now, and some years we see incremental changes and other years dramatic. Madden 10 is largely composed of the incremental changes, despite the plethora of new features EA Tiburon added to the game. The overall gameplay is very similar to last year, and the appearance is only better in some of the aspects. Is a great soundtrack enough to push the game into the buy category, or will the achievements convince you only to rent it?
