Mafia II: Definitive Edition Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Mafia II is one of my favourite games from last generation so put on a snazzy suit, head to Empire Bay, and get ready for a crime spree.
A remastered and complete version of a divisive franchise entry that won't change anyone's mind but is well worth a replay for die-hard fans or anyone keen for a more considered crime sim
We tell you, it’s a good game! It’s not average! It might have some problems here and there, but you have to admit it is a “Good” game.
The Mafia series is critically underrated, overshadowed by the bombastic Grand Theft Auto. Whereas the GTA games’ plots are driven by humor and social commentary, Mafia takes a more historically grounded approach to open-world gangster gameplay. When Mafia 3 launched to lukewarm reviews, I feared that the series would be forgotten, but 2K Games is giving it another shot with Mafia Trilogy.
Though it pulls a lot of the punches today’s open-world games freely throw, Mafia II is a time capsule in a lot of ways. Not only because its post-World War II Empire Bay lives and breathes only to have its face driven into the dirt by enterprising individuals fixated on the American dream, but because it’s a testament to the timeless, story-driven crime drama. The kind that became extinct once substance was forced to make way for Rockstar’s frenzied brand of mania.
Mafia II: Definitive Edition offers a fantastic tale combined with a solid set of visual upgrades. Unfortunately, it is hampered by bugs and some missing quality of life upgrades.
Don’t worry, participation in this particular riot is OK. Today, it’s a Samurai Riot. Specifically, it's Samurai Riot Definitive Edition a mostly 2D, side-scrolling beat-‘em-up that's built to scratch that arcade action itch.Read More
In 2020, Mafia 2 is a game greater than the sum of its parts. It shows its age in several areas, and though flawed, it still has its merits.
Mafia II: Definitive Edition may have definitive in its name, but the numerous glitches that plague it really hold back what is still a good game at its core from truly earning that title.
A slight update to models and textures doesn’t solve Mafia 2’s myriad problems from a decade ago, nor justify a purchase if you don’t own it yet.
