Konami has pulled off a miracle here with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, by staying completely true to the original but adding in modern controls, a new camera angle and overhauled visuals. They have been able to breath new life into this classic stealth-action game, making me feel like I was experiencing it all for the first time again. Ultimately standing on the strength of the original and modernising it to provide the best stealth action game you can play in 2025.

Hideo Kojima’s “Magnum Opus,” Metal Gear Solid 3, is back, but this time in an all-new remake. Dubbed Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Konami has undertaken the massive task of remaking one of the most beloved games of all time, in hopes of introducing a new generation of gamers to the saga’s thrilling origin story while also giving dedicated fans a stunning new way to relive a classic.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is the definitive way to play one of the greatest games of all time. Everything that was incredible about the original game is still intact, while the more poorly aged aspects have been polished supremely. This is a master stroke of a remake, and I sincerely hope we see more of the Metal Gear Solid games remade with such care.

Solid Snake is one of the most iconic heroes of the stealth genre, perhaps even more than Sam Fisher of Splinter Cell fame. But this isn’t a game centered around Solid Snake himself. Rather, Snake Eater focuses on his predecessor, Big Boss, and how he came to inherit that title. Originally the third title in the Metal Gear Solid series and one of the most critically acclaimed stealth games of all time, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remakes that iconic spy thriller for a whole new generation.

In 2004, Hideo Kojima and his team at Konami released the original run of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It was one of most immersive gaming experiences most of us had seen and many legendary bits and pieces would influence games and their players for decades to come. Flash forward, Konami, in its recent trek back into AAA gaming, has attempted to recapture that magic with a remake in Unreal Engine 5. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is so faithful it missed out on a few opportunities to bring it into the present, but it's still a fantastic game nonetheless.

I feel confident that the new gameplay mechanics, quality-of-life improvements, and immense visual overhaul in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater far outweigh the issues that come along with the changes. This gives more players a new way to experience the beloved classic, complete with more modern controls and mechanics without taking away from the original feel of the game.

The performance isn't perfect. Playing in Performance Mode on a base PS5, I experienced significant framerate dips during busier sections of the game. It was often distracting during big boss battles and complicated stealth sequences. I still think it was an odd choice to adapt Metal Gear Solid 3 first, though, and the cracks do show in some of Delta's story. It's the first game in the continuity, but, of course, the third in release order, and it's incredibly self-referential in that typical Kojima way.

Between its old-school stealth-action gameplay and engaging spy-thriller story, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater largely succeeds as a faithful, visually impressive remake of the 2004 classic.

With Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Konami has achieved what it set out to do: breathe new life into a classic while keeping it as authentic as possible. With that in mind, its only real faults are some mechanics which now feel a little awkward and dated. The visuals here are phenomenal, bringing more nuance to the game's cutscenes, and the new modern play style is great for newcomers and those annoyed by the restrictive camera of the original game.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is unequivocally the best way to play Metal Gear Solid 3 if you’re all about modern comforts and higher frame rates. But under all the modernising gloss, it’s the same silly, daft game full of world-saving babble, over-the-top performances, surprise-stuffing, and a confounding script that’s very much a product of its time, for better or for worse.
