Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is the definitive way to experience one of the best games in a series known for its excellence. Some technical issues can mar the overall package, but there is no denying how much work has gone into this remake.

Twenty-one years is a long time for a videogame, but the writing in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater aged like a fine wine. Konami played its hand well by keeping all that made the game great, and just replacing the more dated, practical bits. From crawling around in the mountains to fighting Soviet Spider-Man in the jungle, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is fun to play and actually feels good. It is the perfect gift for Metal Gear Solid fans, ten years after the mainline game. Despite some minor gripes specific to the PlayStation 5 integration, this game is a sign that you can, in fact, improve on perfection... if it's part of the mission.

Remaking Metal Gear without its creator seems foolhardy but this is as good an effort as could be imagined, without completely redesigning the original game.

With Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Konami has achieved what it set out to do: breathe new life into a classic while keeping it as authentic as possible. With that in mind, its only real faults are some mechanics which now feel a little awkward and dated. The visuals here are phenomenal, bringing more nuance to the game's cutscenes, and the new modern play style is great for newcomers and those annoyed by the restrictive camera of the original game.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is unequivocally the best way to play Metal Gear Solid 3 if you’re all about modern comforts and higher frame rates. But under all the modernising gloss, it’s the same silly, daft game full of world-saving babble, over-the-top performances, surprise-stuffing, and a confounding script that’s very much a product of its time, for better or for worse.

Konami has taken great care with the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, bringing this legendary spy thriller to a new audience with a modernized play style and thoughtful QoL tweaks to suit today’s gamers. If you haven’t played Snake Eater or any of the MGS series before, this is the perfect entry point into Hideo Kojima’s magnum opus.

It was one of most immersive gaming experiences most of us had seen and many legendary bits and pieces would influence games and their players for decades to come. Flash forward, Konami, in its recent trek back into AAA gaming, has attempted to recapture that magic with a remake in Unreal Engine 5. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a PlayStation 2 classic in a way not many games from that era are. Few games from that generation continue to hold up graphically, narratively, and remain fun to play. Metal Gear Solid 3 is still impressive to look at and play, even in 2025, which is a testament to Hideo Kojima and the team that created and released it in 2004. I never thought it needed a remake, but now that it’s here, I’m not sure I will ever be able to go back to the original versions.

METAL GEAR SOLID DELTA: SNAKE EATER certainly has quite the legacy to live up to and I have great news because it's absolutely awesome.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is an authentic recreation of a masterpiece. Each aspect of the visuals has been beautifully and faithfully modernized with painstaking attention to detail. Although Konami has only reworked minor elements, these aspects combine to improve the overall experience. Even though the game does show its age at points, it’s still undoubtedly one of the greatest adventure games and Delta ensures a new generation can experience it at its very best.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a fantastic version of an absolute masterpiece, and one I’d wholly recommend to anyone. As a remake, it’s incredibly beholden to the original, to a point that is almost too faithful outside of minor tweaks to gameplay and a visual overhaul. That isn’t inherently a bad thing, but does mean it won’t have too much fresh to offer those returning to it.

Konami has pulled off a miracle here with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, by staying completely true to the original but adding in modern controls, a new camera angle and overhauled visuals. They have been able to breath new life into this classic stealth-action game, making me feel like I was experiencing it all for the first time again. Ultimately standing on the strength of the original and modernising it to provide the best stealth action game you can play in 2025.

Dubbed Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Konami has undertaken the massive task of remaking one of the most beloved games of all time, in hopes of introducing a new generation of gamers to the saga’s thrilling origin story while also giving dedicated fans a stunning new way to relive a classic.

The performance isn't perfect. Playing in Performance Mode on a base PS5, I experienced significant framerate dips during busier sections of the game. It was often distracting during big boss battles and complicated stealth sequences. I still think it was an odd choice to adapt Metal Gear Solid 3 first, though, and the cracks do show in some of Delta's story. It's the first game in the continuity, but, of course, the third in release order, and it's incredibly self-referential in that typical Kojima way.

Solid Snake is one of the most iconic heroes of the stealth genre, perhaps even more than Sam Fisher of Splinter Cell fame. But this isn’t a game centered around Solid Snake himself. Rather, Snake Eater focuses on his predecessor, Big Boss, and how he came to inherit that title. Originally the third title in the Metal Gear Solid series and one of the most critically acclaimed stealth games of all time, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remakes that iconic spy thriller for a whole new generation.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is the definitive way to play one of the greatest games of all time. Everything that was incredible about the original game is still intact, while the more poorly aged aspects have been polished supremely. This is a master stroke of a remake, and I sincerely hope we see more of the Metal Gear Solid games remade with such care.
