Myst Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Myst on the PlayStation Portable is actually a good port, despite the load times and the occasional consternation with the controls. The refashioned visuals for the higher resolution widescreen look nice but without completely ditching the classic PC/Mac look, which has its charm; although, it would have been nice to have gotten realMyst instead. This game is slow and ponderous, but that is by design and a reason it feels rewarding to actually solve an age. Give it a go if you want to see what all of the hubbub was about in 1993 or if you appreciate retrogaming.

Myst's potential to amaze might be worth the gamble, but it is probably best left to players who enjoy the surreal, the off-key and the challenging.

The classic puzzle game gets a modern update, but still feels dated.

The original Myst released, if you can believe it, twenty-seven years ago for the Macintosh personal computer. Since then, the game has reached all-timer status for how innovative a puzzler it was all those years ago. Naturally, it’s seen re-release after re-release and even remakes after remakes. Now, we’re seeing the classic puzzle adventure break new ground by jumping into the virtual reality space on the Oculus Quest. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s not without its faults...

The real crime is that Myst simply hasn’t aged well. It moves at a very slow pace, and the interface feels a bit clunky at times, especially when negotiating tight spaces (no, I wanted to look back, not to the side!). Myst’s descendants ultimately one-upped it at every turn. Riven (the sequel to Myst) improved almost every aspect of the game design, though the puzzles were harder.. The genre has since gone out of style due to its archaic trappings. But if you’re chomping at the bit to experience the granddaddy of first-person adventure games (and some would say, first person shooters), t…

It’s almost tragic how underdone this port is. As old as Myst is, I still enjoy the kind of game it offers, and to have a version on the 3DS for on the go play would have been great. Sadly, it is very, very difficult to recommend this, even to the remaining fans of Myst out there.
