I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked playing NBA Live 19. The core basketball game and its various modes offer plenty of chances to have a fun basketball experience. The new animation system makes action on the court look and act more realistic than ever, and a robust training mode gives plenty of opportunity to improve. The NBA Live series has come a long way since its foray into the current generation, and NBA Live 19 is no different in its improvements. Much like fans of NBA Live 19 cover athlete, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, fans of the series have been trusting the process and with good cause. Each year, the NBA Live games have continued to improve, but while NBA Live 19 is a solid title, it has yet to overcome the opposition. Put simply, NBA Live 19 provides a fun experience, but not the most realistic of simulations.
In the end, any progress made, whether it’s leveling up my player or regaining control of my court, just feels aimless. If I’m simply being rewarded with cosmetic options, I don’t see the point of furthering my character's career. If my Icon path is linear, why make me go to a menu to activate those perks? Why play the mid-range game if driving straight to the hoop while getting double teamed will still grant me the 2 points I need? It’s questionable decisions like this that sets NBA Live 19 just below the bar of greatness.
Fun until it's not.
After nearly a decade of struggling to find its game, last year EA Sports finally found a promising centerpiece to build its NBA Live series around. The create-a-player mode The One gave hoop heads a one-stop-shop for writing their NBA legacy, showing off their skills on the streets, and competing with rival players online. NBA Live 19 adds some new wrinkles to this formula, but stagnancy in legacy modes and new gameplay problems prevent the series from taking a big step forward.
