Neverwinter has finally made its way to the PlayStation 4, joining the ranks of an ever increasing list of console MMOs hoping to a chance at new life. The game launched on Xbox One in March of last year, so the team at Cryptic has had plenty of time to polish up the experience for PlayStation 4 players. Were they able to do it? Neverwinter fails to nail the social aspects and adapt to consoles effectively, but it’s still a great solo experience. A solid F2P loot-grind with D&D flavor, but it lacks the social aspects that highlight the MMO genre elsewhere.

Neverwinter is one of the best free-to-play games this year, with its fluid combat, extensive amount of quests, and Foundry tool in which players can create their own adventures. Most importantly, premium points and items don't affect the game for those who choose to adventure on the free route. Role-playing fans owe themselves an extended journey to the world of Neverwinter.

Neverwinter is a polished, if uninspiring MMO. There’s a welcome fluidity to combat, but it doesn’t do anything innovative, taking the successes of Star Trek Online and implementing them in a D&D world, as well as borrowing from other post-World of Warcraft action-orientated MMOs. Neverwinter isn't a hardcore MMORPG, nor is it likely to compel you to cast aside your current favorite MMO to devote your full attention to it. But taken in small doses, it's a generally fun and free romp through one of fantasy's most beloved universes, and the player-generated Foundry missions occasionally yield more memorable moments than fantasy MMOs with massive budgets.

There are a lot of really interesting locales to visit but my main issue with them is that they feel more like levels than actual places. The game isn’t open-world so you’ll need to access the map to travel to these places and many of them are small enough to make me laugh at anyone lazy enough to use a mount. Each area has a few smaller in-door dungeons, but that doesn’t help the entire game feel more like stages in a Mario game than you exploring a large world. On the plus side, the environment looks pretty damn good...
