Professional reviews from gaming critics

Overall, New World: Aeternum is a fun, engrossing open-world RPG. There is an amazing amount of stuff to do, from harvesting and crafting, to combat and adventure. The main story is nothing groundbreaking but it is entertaining nonetheless. Player progression feels easy and relatively quick, but there is so much to experience that it feels like it will take a long time before I start to get bored....

Ultimately, New World: Aeternum is a fantastic MMO, building on the foundations of the greatest games of yesteryear. However, after 60 hours, I'm just not sure if I'll be returning to the shores of Aeternum anytime soon.

New World: Aeternum is the MMO that New World should have been in 2021. A few small niggles are keeping it from truly elite status.

New World: Aeternum is an expanded re-release of Amazon Games' promising MMO New World, bursting at the seams with new content, and available now on PS5. Completely reborn, the game is in a very different place than the bug-riddled state in which it first launched, and has grown into a behemoth in the intervening years. We thought our precious free time was safe from this kind of thing on console;...

Engaging and approachable, New World: Aeternum mostly nails the modern MMORPG experience with its refined and cohesive game world and intuitive combat system. Crafting and gathering remain a highlight here but all types of players will find this game worthy of its upfront price of admission. That said, those looking for a wide range of high-end raiding content will be better served elsewhere and t...

New World Aeternum boasts one of the most gorgeous and immersive worlds to explore in the ARPG market. Despite its technical issues that are often distracting, Aeternum is a breath of fresh air full of things to do that will hook casual and hardcore players alike.

New World: Aeternum is a reboot of the original game on the PC, and with it comes several interesting additions, and updates, which are sure to entice current PC players who always wanted to play New World on a console. It’s a solid experience playing solo, but the meat is the MMO experience, which is going to carry the game well past the single-player experience.

While Aeternum doesn't do anything to avoid the pitfalls inherent to the MMORPG genre, it lessens their impact with flexibility and smart multiplayer mechanics. The Grind falls to the wayside while dynamic, fast-paced gameplay takes center stage. Married with a setting that diverges from MMO predecessors, New World: Aeternum offers an experience that will keep players invested, and enjoying the wh...

New World: Aeternum has made some great changes in time for its console release, and while the endgame might not have too much to offer yet, the leveling process is plenty of fun, especially if you go deep into the crafting system.

I enjoyed New World: Aeternum as an action RPG with relaxed character-building and challenging content but was never motivated to stick around and grind out an insane amount of hours. This almost feels intentional, with the quickened road to endgame and retooling of the campaign. The game certainly feels more fleshed out than it did three years ago and has settled into being a perfectly decent onl...

New World Aeternum struggles to be worthwhile for many players. The MMO genre is stuffed with excellent dug-in titles that are difficult to pull players away from for long, just as the original release of New World saw. With its unimpactful combat, lackluster story, and its most interesting content only being accessible to the most dedicated of players, this spiritual successor just doesn’t mix it...
