But for anyone who wants to relive the glory days of turn-based RPGs, or want to experience one for the first time, Octopath Traveler II is a great way to dip your toes in the water. The sequel makes a lot of positive improvements to the original and can easily be played as a standalone title. It's also another strong example that turn-based RPGs are not dead. If anything, Octopath Traveler II proves that with the right number of updates to the classic formula, turn-based RPGs can still deliv...

The issues that I have with Octopath Traveler II ultimately feel like nitpicks as there are so many aspects of the game that make it a masterclass of an RPG and a significant improvement upon its predecessor. It looks fantastic and sounds even better. It's deep enough for RPG veterans to have a good time while also being welcoming for newcomers to the genre. Furthermore, it has a friendly structure that allows those with busy lives to easily make time for it. Just play it already.

Octopath Traveler II surpasses the original in every way. The additions to combat were greatly needed and spiced up battles, the story, characters, and pacing are leagues better, and somehow the music cranks it up another few notches. There are still a few issues to be ironed out, like grinding, but this is a retro-style RPG you won’t want to miss.

When Octopath Traveler released back in 2018, it was an immediate hit. Fans were blown away by this love letter to classic JRPGs, with its striking blend of HD lighting and environments and 2D pixel art graphics. Sure, it had some issues, with some storylines not being as good as others and the eight characters never having any intersecting quests, but overall, Octopath Traveler was met with favorable reviews. When news came out about a sequel in the works, fans were elated. Now with the time...

Octopath Traveler 2 is a gorgeous JRPG that improves on the original in almost every way. And it is a blast to play on Steam Deck!

Octopath Traveler II doesn’t reinvent the wheel to stay relevant. Instead, it dives deeper into what made the first game so much fun. It doesn’t hold up quite as well as the original, but it’s still an excellent JRPG to play!

Octopath Traveler 2 not only iterated or refined, but it also made the Octopath Traveler series a highly anticipated series in my eyes.

Despite generally positive reviews, the first Octopath Traveler had its fair share of specific criticisms. Playing to its strengths, while working to fix perceived weaknesses, Octopath Traveler II delivers a masterpiece of a turn-based JRPG.

Octopath Traveler 2 is one of the best JRPGs ever made. It continues to deliver on what made the original so good while improving on its weaknesses. Its only true flaw is that the new Crossed Paths stories are treated as a side act rather than the main selling point. Despite this shortcoming, when all is said and done Octopath Traveler 2 will be remembered as an all-time great.

Five years has passed since the release of Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler, and its sequel, the aptly-named Octopath Traveler II, has now launched as a multi-platform release. Taking the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to sequel design, Octopath Traveler II is a more robust revisit of the first game’s formula, improving in many areas, yet migrating many of the first game’s flaws. With a compelling and well-written new batch of heroes, some welcome gameplay tweaks and ...

An outstanding achievement from start to finish. Octopath Traveler II takes what made the original such a success and builds on it. It may feel more of the same but why fix something if it isn't broken. The additions made to exploration and combat are all for the better. The only real issue is that not much effort went into making the game less grandy or addressing the various difficulty spikes Octopath Traveler II suffers from.

As an ode to '90s JRPGs, there's no doubt that Octopath Traveler 2 has chops. Its aesthetic and combat system are perfectly judged to recall the old while feeling new. The fragmented nature of its eight separate plotlines, however, means the world and its characters lack coherence and room to escape simple archetypes, while the stories themselves lack sufficient nuance to hold the attention.

In a vacuum, Octopath Traveler II is superior to its predecessor in practically every way, with improvements across the board. If you loved the first one, you will almost assuredly love this one, too. To praise it in this way is partially backhanded, however, as it fails to eke out its own legacy in any way, shape or form.

Octopath Traveler II is the rare sequel that manages to improve on the original without changing too much, finding success by expanding and polishing.

Octopath Traveler II is a gorgeous retro-style JRPG with well-crafted characters, an engaging battle system, and stunning level and character design. It’s held back by the same weaknesses as the original:slow battle pacing, a steep difficulty curve, and a confusing anthology-style narrative.

When compared to the original, Octopath Traveler II is largely more of the same but better. The battle system is just as enjoyable as it was the first time around with additional layers of strategy added. Solistia is a great new world to explore, and the added day and night cycle help make everywhere feel more alive. While at its core it plays like a classic turn-based JRPG, the Break and Boost system helps set it apart from the classics that inspired it. The HD-2D graphic style does a fantastic job in making Octopath Traveler II feel both contemporary and...

Octopath Traveler II manages to improve on almost every aspect of its predecessor, whether they needed it or not. The exploration is deeper with more nooks and crannies to nose your way through. The combat is far more intricate, giving greater options to build your party and skillset, and a large degree of player choice. The visuals are absolutely beautiful, and the sound design is phenomenal once again. Honestly, Octopath Traveler II has basically negated the need to play the first title, and I cannot think of higher praise.

Octopath Traveler 2 puts in a good effort to improve on the original. A refined combat design, engaging characters, interesting stories, eye catching environments, and a dynamite soundtrack make this a game worth experiencing. It's a strong outing, one that will do right by classic JRPG fans. Unfortunately, it gets undone by awkward narrative pacing and an unbearably long grind. I didn't go into this game expecting a short journey and I knew what I was getting into with this love letter to old school JRPGs, but when I looked at the game clock and saw that 20-25 hours had...

Octopath Traveler 2, like its predecessor, is a throwback to the golden age of the JRPG. It relies on the tried and true formula we were so fond of in the 90s and gives it a modern facelift. One would think that’d result in a relatively niche game, but the original did surprisingly well, and this is more of a good thing.

A lot can change in around five years. Octopath Traveler made a moderate splash in 2018 thanks to its striking HD-2D visual style, unique character-focused structure, and the fact that the Nintendo Switch just didn’t have a lot of games like it at the time, but it didn’t quite join the pantheon of JRPG classics. Perhaps the game’s somewhat flat writing was to blame, or maybe the glut of HD-2D games that have come since stole its thunder. Whatever the reason, it’s now 2023, and it feels like Octopath Traveler II has to make its case to the public all...
