One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Last month saw the release of Dynasty Warriors 8, the latest instalment in the seemingly never-ending hack and slash series. This month, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 arrives on Western shores, bringing with it more vast, hectic battles to sink your bloodied weapon of choice into. You’d be forgiven for being worn out on Warriors with two releases in as many months, but thankfully artist Eiichiro Oda’s popular universe brings a welcome breath of fresh air to the tried and tested formula.
The plot doesn’t require a back knowledge of the One Piece series, though it helps give each of the characters personality. Ultimately though, the only people that would even look at this game are fans of One Piece, and the game does a good job of recognising where its potential audience lies, and then targeting it brilliantly.
A nice improvement over the original title, and a no-brainer for those aching to mow through hordes of enemies as the series' famous rubber protagonist.Perhaps the greatest advantage of the move to digital is a reduction in risk costs associated with localization. [...]
As Omega Force’s latest Dynasty Warriors spinoff, Pirate Warriors 2 does a great job of making the One Piece franchise work for its gameplay. However, it’s easy to see how non-superfans could get lost in Pirate Warriors 2’s slow buildup, and it risks failing to really take off until it’s almost too late. Combat is entertaining, but it’s entirely unmemorable, and not only because one battle blends into the next after a while. To its credit, it’s everything it promises to be – but it’s unlikely to convert anyone not already invested in One Piece.
Online multiplayer is also back with a few new features. A player can now issue an SOS whilst playing and a random online player can see their message and choose to join their match to help out. You can also do this for others as well. Traditional multiplayer is also available for those wanting to play with their friends. Matchmaking can be a little bit off in terms of placing you with similarly levelled players but this game was a ton of fun whilst playing online.
