The Onimusha series began in 2001 on the PlayStation 2 and spawned several games between the mainline series, spin-offs for consoles like PS2, and even one on the Game Boy Advance. It’s an exciting time to be an Onimusha fan, which is a weird sentence to write in 2025. The horror samurai series, sort of a demonic sword-fighting spin on Resident Evil, was first released in 2001, and then had several games that followed in quick succession until 2006, when the franchise practically went dormant. Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny is a bold sequel that adds RPG elements into the mix and has more of an action focus. Awkward fixed camera angles add unwanted frustration to combat, though, and the new weapon switching mechanic is troublesome to use in the heat of battle.

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny is a strong, worthy successor to the original that is now at its absolute best on Switch. Some of it feels dated by modern standards, with fixed camera angles that arguably should have been ditched back in 2002, but it still feels incredibly fun regardless. The remaster adds in a bunch of quality-of-life updates and extras that both longtime fans and newcomers will appreciate, but ultimately, this is a faithful revival of one of the PS2's very best games. Now the patient wait for Onimusha 3 begins.

The time has come for a new generation of samurai. Two decades after its release in 2002, Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny has escaped from being confined to the PlayStation 2 as an exclusive and can now be enjoyed across multiple platforms for modern players. Though it’s not a complete remake like Capcom’s other properties, the remaster retains what made the original so appealing and fun. Except now, new and returning fans have a chance to experience it. Just don’t expect it to be easy. Like the Devil May Cry series, when Capcom promises action and challenge, they always deliver.
