Papo & Yo introduces players to a boy named Quico and his new best friend, Monster, a cuddly creature with an unfortunate addiction to poisonous frogs. On its face Papo & Yo is a tale of boy and monster, of frogs and fruits, but beneath its fantastical scenario lurks a subtle maturity that goes beyond the reach of many games. It's a story devised to mirror designer Vander Caballero's own struggles in a family that bore the burden of addiction, under an alcoholic patriarch, and delivers a tale that, even hidden behind a colourful mask of reverie, throws some emotional jabs.

It’s really difficult to focus on the lesser aspects of a game like Papo & Yo, one of the most inventive and interesting games in recent memory. The puzzles are consistently enjoyable, while the narrative undercutting this fantasy world is truly heartbreaking. It’s hard not to be slightly disappointed with the lack of polish though, technical bugs and problems appearing far too often.
