If you ever thought that games could not tell engaging stories, or if you ever thought that games could not have the narrative density of literature or film, here’s the game you just have to play.
Thomas Was Alone is one of those games that some will love unashamedly while others will question why a game with so little platforming or puzzling challenge could ever be entertaining.Thomas Was Alone is a simple indie puzzle platformer which features rectangles for characters. Thomas Was Alone sells itself as “a minimalist game about jumping and friendship” – and unlike most slogans, this one doesn’t overstate itself. I can say with reasonable confidence that it is the most endearingly characterful game about jumping rectangles that you will ever play. The understated aesthetic design and unusual co-op puzzles will absorb you for the game’s duration – the wit and personality of the writing, though, will stay with you for much longer.
Thomas Was Alone is a simple puzzle-platformer that will get you to care about colorful little squares
Although 'simple and charming' is a worn-out phrase used to describe the numerous puzzle platformers on the PlayStation Network, there's no question that those three words suit Thomas Was Alone perfectly. Guiding geometric shapes through a gauntlet of hazards and obstacles is the order of the day, but while the cross-buy adventure may look and sound dreary, each object is brought brilliantly to life. You may not expect it, but you'll quickly come to love these basic bricks.
There are two forms of simplicity, the good kind, and the bad kind. Each of us sees the varying forms of simplicity in their own way and judge games according to their own viewpoint, in my books the bad kind of simplicity is the tiresome gameplay of most mobile games, but the good kind is always something special. Thomas was Alone is the good kind of simplicity, this game is a showing of how something that looks so simple, basic and like nobody put any real effort into it can surprise you and truly develop into something great, something memorable.
