Pathologic 2

Pathologic 1 & 2 are masterpieces of games as art. They are cruel and disturbing, but ask unique questions and do things you won’t see anywhere else. These are singularly unique experiences that are worth suffering through.

Pathologic 2 is odd and very unsettling. Just to make sure you never get a breath of fresh air in a town that’s going insane, the game is extremely punishing, and your 12 days of hell pass by sluggishly. Although the game will be getting a difficulty setting, the difficulty of the game was personally enjoyable. The only true downsides were the arguably unusable combat system and repetitive models.

In the mood for something emotionally draining that will openly mock you and reveal the utter pointlessness of existence? Pathologic 2 is the game for you.

As I sit here writing my review of Pathologic 2, the sun is streaming in through the windows. It feels like one of the nicest days of the year so far, and perfectly bookends my time in The Town. Pathologic 2 presents a weird, engaging, and wholly unique world to uncover and explore, but makes the act of playing it a clunky and laborious chore.

Pathologic 2 is a flawed theoretical masterpiece. I give all the credit to Ice-Pick Lodge for having the ambition to develop one of the most intriguing games I've ever played. I also am in awe of their courage to stick to their artistic vision even with the knowledge that their vision likely cost them a number of sales. That said, I don't know if I have it in me to play another Ice-Pick Lodge game...

Pathologic 2 is a game that will appeal to a very particular type of player, and be despised by everyone else. Those on the fence should scope out the game on either YouTube or Twitch to know what you are getting into.
