With a wonderfully designed setting, it’s hard not to love Pokémon Sword. Galar is simply a joy to explore. Its new Pokémon are a varied and well-designed bunch, and the new additions to the series formula is enough to keep it feeling fresh, even if it’s not quite the evolution we’d hoped for. Worth a mention is the game’s fantastic sound design; its killer soundtrack sets the tone perfectly for every battle, pumping endless amounts of atmosphere particularly when facing off against gym leaders. Pokemon Sword and Shield are extremely secure investments – we get what we got 23 years ago, but in a new graphic design. And although the series remains amusing and enchanting, you can't deny that rotten wood is gaping from underneath the colorful paint.

On one hand, the online is absolutely broken and embarrassing. On the other, anytime I’m not dealing with that nonsense, I’m having fun with the game. Maybe in a couple of months, when I’ve min-maxed every Pokémon in the Dex and am just focusing on raids, I’ll feel more antagonistic toward the game and its woeful online, but right now, when I’m doing literally anything else in it, I’m having a good time.

Pokémon Sword & Shield is probably the most controversial game in the series, especially during the last few weeks prior to this launch. Fans started hating on the game because of the “reduced” Pokédex size and disregard for the continuity of previous titles in the franchise.
