Professional reviews from gaming critics

Project Warlock wears its 90s first-person shooter influence on its sleeve. It’s fast, violent and perfectly paced—a must play, whether you harbour fond memories of its inspiration or not. Besides some minor setbacks caused by level design quirks, Project Warlock was pure, unadulterated fun from start to finish.

Project Warlock is a blood-splattered love letter to retro-shooters, but still there’s plenty here to hook you even if you’ve never experienced the titles that inspired it. A glorious, gruesome outing, Project Warlock is sometimes unforgiving, but once you push past the first few levels, it’s a bloody joy to play.

Project Warlock is an excellent throwback to the fast-paced, gory strafe-fests of the '90s. It's got tons of big, meaty weapons, magic attack abilities, some light puzzle elements and an endless procession of freakish hellspawn to blow into tiny chunks across five impressively varied settings. Buckshot Software's debut effort is an easy recommendation for retro FPS fans and one of the better shooter experiences currently available on Switch.

Project Warlock is just a damned blast. You could say this is the best version of Wolfenstein 3D ever made. Hell, it even tops the original Doom in some categories. It certainly won’t win awards for originality, but this is a true work of passion that pays off in the end.

Project Warlock is a Doom-like that packs a punch. The levels are full of secrets, the enemies have a great range of behaviours, and the weapons – boy, the weapons – are a joy to use. Add all of that to the 60 levels to learn and explore and the challenges provided by the higher difficulty levels and you have a winning formula. Even if the pixel graphics aren’t your usual cup of tea, Project Warlock is more than worth your time. This is a journey to Hell that is well worth the ride.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you might know that I’m a sucker for old school and retro-inspired first-person shooters. I love older titles like Turok, as well as more modern retro-inspired titles like Quake Champions, Doom and Wolfenstein. When I found out about Project Warlock, a brand new retro-inspired shooter exclusive to the GOG store, I knew I had to test out that bad boy. After playing its dozens upon dozens upon dozens of levels, I finally have my (very positive) verdict.

The music begins to thunder in your head. Your shotgun is pumped and ready – no wasted reload times here. Demons and other hellish monsters are beginning to descend upon you. What more could you ask for? A grin cracks across your face as you take aim and prepare for frantic carnage… Wait, it’s not DOOM? Project Warlock might not be at the top of your list of games to snag this year but if you are a fan of first-person shooters it definitely needs to be on your radar. Notable for a number of reasons, we can’t even begin to talk about Project Warlock without bringing up that it was designed by a...
