Puddle Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Puddle is dirt-simple by design, but its simplicity betrays a high degree of challenge. When you start to get into the game's later stages, you'll find yourself stuck in some situations that require not just a high degree of perseverance and a steady hand, but also a lot of patience. Puddle is in many ways a Catch-22, a game with extremely accessible gameplay but also some insanely difficult puzzles that might frustrate some newcomers. Still, if you are looking for a game that will tax your brain without complicated a control scheme, then Puddle might be the one to quench your puzzle thirst.

Puddle is a physics-based mixture of puzzle and platform elements, with the player steering a puddle of liquid to an exit point by manipulating the game environment.

You could never accuse Puddle of lacking ideas. The Vita version of Neko Entertainment’s award-winning fluid-based puzzler is brimming with variety, from a tense jaunt across the test tubes and pipettes of a functioning scientific laboratory, right through to an underground romp as a single droplet of deceased rat discharge. There’s an underlying moral to the title’s cyclical narrative, but it never dwells upon it. Instead, Puddle is perfectly content with diluting its philosophical message – and allowing you to absorb your own meaning from it.

I was impressed with the sheer amount of variety in the game, but I can’t help but wish it were utilized to a greater extent. Puddle looks and plays great, but the difficulty caused by its physics can hamper the experience.
