The first Puyo Puyo Tetris was originally released for pretty much every single gaming console that existed back in 2014, but initially only in Japan. It took Sega a further three years to localize those titles and release them in the West, with an additional port for the Nintendo Switch. Taking The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild out of the equation, that was basically the single best title released for the system during its first couple of months or so. For as much as I loved that game ...
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a worthy successor to the original and something that both veterans and newcomers alike are sure to find entertainment with, even if it’s not as fresh as before.
As a big fan of the original and of Tetris in general, it really pains me to give Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 this score. I really want it to be higher, but the persistence of the sensitivity problem had me throwing down my controller and cursing in rage too much to not be a factor. If you aren’t a serious Tetris or Puyo Puyo veteran, this probably won’t matter to you and you absolutely can have a blast. But if you are, there’s a good chance you’ll experience some frustration alongside the fun...
Never in a million years did I think Tetris needed a story mode. But somehow, this mash-up with Puyo Puyo has successfully created not one, but two such experiences. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is out now on PlayStation 5 (and PS4), providing match game addicts like myself single player fun and intense multiplayer throwdowns.
Between Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Tetris 99, and Tetris Effect Connected, one thing is clear; we are in a golden age for Tetris fans. Each major offering gives players something different. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 gives players an unparalleled slate of local multiplayer content that elevates both Puyo Puyo and Tetris from just addictive, hypnotic puzzle games to fun, bombastic, colorful party games.
Puyo Puyo Tetris has been kicking around for a while and it features a brilliant blend of 2 puzzle greats. Now, there's finally a sequel!
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a charming puzzle mix that doesn't improve much on the original.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is an ambitious sequel that follows the previously successful entry of the same title. Whether you’re a beginner to Puyo Puyo or a celebrated Tetris champion, there is something for everyone of all skill levels to enjoy. From a brand-new JRPG-like adventure to even a new way to play our favourite chaotic combination, this game offers a lot more ways to test your Puyo Puyo and Tetris skills, whether you plan to play alone or with someone else.
Everything that makes Puyo Puyo Tetris great is here, but the additions are incredibly underwhelming. The story is just as simplistic as the first one, and the new “map” is a glorified way to show off a list of challenges hidden behind light character banter. If you’re new to the series, this would be a good starting point, but anyone content with the first Puyo Puyo Tetris doesn’t necessarily need to upgrade.
Have you ever played a game that you find is far better than it has any right to be? Maybe it’s the wacky crossover of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Or even possibly it’s the bizarre concrete jungle to explore in Yakuza. Regardless, it’s rare that you find a game that absolutely should not click for you but does. Maybe, if you’re like me, it’s none other than SEGA made puzzle game Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.

Just like the first game, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a joy to play. Whether you love just Puyo Puyo, or Tetris, or both, you’ll find something to enjoy here. Beautifully presented with over-the-top characters, larger-than-life animations and a bright and bold colour palette, it’s a game that’s impossible to play without a silly smile on your face. Apart from when you’re losing, that is. But you’ll always pick yourself up and play again – it’s too infectious not to.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 isn’t the game-changer that the first Puyo Puyo Tetris was. In fact, it’s just more of the same with extra toppings. The new characters, better presented Adventure mode and improved Lesson mode are all great additions, but it would have been better of more had been done to make everything else feel fresh and improved. The Skill Battle mode helps, but that mode is undercut by a poorly-implemented stats system and the existing disparity between Tetris and Puyo Puyo. With that in mind, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is better as an entry point for new fans than it is for older fans who already have the first game. It’s all the fun of the original, but there’s not enough new here to justify buying basically the same game all over again.
There may not be a whopping amount of new content besides the introduction of the JRPG-like Skill Battles, but Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 refines the overall formula and offers players another great puzzle game that is even more accessible than before.
Not needing to reinvent the wheel, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 delivers the same fun and brilliant mash-up of two of the best drop-puzzle games ever with a healthy dollop of content, both classic and new. The jury's still out on whether the new Skill Battles will change things up, but regardless, this is a great puzzle package for parties or pros, and hopefully a great jumping off point for newcomers to discover the marvel and skill of competitive puzzle battles.
