Rise of the Tomb Raider hasn’t lost its luster a year after its initial release. Bundled together with all of the content released so far, Lara’s already-packed adventure is now even bigger. And while Playing the new non-combat story mode, Blood Ties, with PlayStation VR was enjoyable (when I was in Comfort Mode, at least), and played normally it’s an interesting character study. The co-op enabled Endurance mode is also a new highlight.. For PS4 players just getting their first opportunity to play Rise of the Tomb Raider, 20 Year Celebration is a complete and amazing package.
An awesome adventure that delivers an epic sense of discovery. On PS4 Rise of the Tomb Raider is just as gorgeous as ever and packed full with some excellent bonus content.
In Lara Croft's next chapter of her journey, she must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is frustrating on one level because it’s so completely in thrall of the blockbuster system that you can feel the creative frustration on several levels through the game, from its storytelling through level design. That frustration has resulted in a blockbuster that almost breaks free of its limitations at times, and it’s certainly an enjoyable game. It’s just that it would be interesting to see what the developers could come up with if they had a more limited budget (and thus lower sales expectations, allowing them to go after a more specific audience with a more…
While I do think that playing Rise of the Tomb Raider is pretty clunky and has not aged particularly well, I still had a fun time experiencing the game for the first time on Nintendo Switch 2. Over the course of a weekend I completed the main story, explored all the hidden tombs and had a lovely burst of nostalgia for an era of AAA games that is slowly coming back into fashion. Game mechanics and the overall player experience have improved significantly over the past eleven years. Yet, Rise of the Tomb Raider is still not too far removed from that time, allowing you to easily pick up and enjoy...
I'm probably guilty of hoping that, now that the nu-Lara groundwork is established, Tomb Raider might now feel more free to re-embrace the tonal qualities that we loved the original games for. 'Celebtration' or no, I shouldn't realistically expect add-on content for a game which very deliberately employs a dour vibe to somehow depart from that. Happy 20th birthday, Lara. I hope you find your way home one day.
Rounding out the new content is a multiplayer co-op version of the endurance mode which will have you and another player stranded in a map trying to survive for as long as possible. The survival mode is already a really neat mode and getting to do it with another player just adds to it. If you want more info on these modes, including the VR mode which I wasn’t able to try, you can read our hands-on preview here. If Xbox One or PC owners of the game have already purchased the season pass then they’ll receive the new content through that.
