Shadow Man Remastered Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
A bit of an interesting paradox, then; it's difficult to recommend Shadow Man Remastered to those who haven't played the game before, while — at the same time — if they do wish to check it out, this is absolutely the only way we'd recommend doing so. It's a sterling port, rich with new and restored content, improved visuals, copious customisation and almost-flawless performance; it runs at 60fps locked with only the very occasional hitch. Shadow Man has never been a masterpiece, but it is a clear labour of love with plenty to offer those willing to endure its more aged mechanics and structural...
There's something to love here for almost any type of gamer, including horror fans, Metroidvania enthusiasts, and even platformer lovers. While the combat can grow stale and tedious due to its lack of innovation, it's still good enough to keep the player engaged for hours on end as they traverse Deadside on their journey to save the world. The story of Shadow Man is really where it shines, though, with excellent voice acting and a dark tone that was arguably ahead of its time at its initial r...
What it comes down to is that Shadow Man Remastered is an excellent title that I enjoyed thoroughly. However, it is an excellent twenty-something-year-old title, and some people just can’t go back to that era. I get it. But for the rest of us, this is definitely a title worth pulling back from Deadside.
Shadow Man was one of the most interesting Nintendo 64 games I never got to play back in the day, as it was deemed “too violent and occultISH” for a then-six year old. Given how massive it was in terms of size and length, I remember many gaming magazines publishing walkthroughs for it scattered throughout many issues, making me feel like I was missing out on one of the best games of the time. It took me a whopping twenty-two years to finally play it and find out what the hype was all abou...
I'm all for bringing back games from the past and Shadow Man Remastered is one that I didn't expect but it's here and that's quite cool.
Shadow Man Remastered infuriates as often as it delights, but it's a solid experience, and Nightdive has done an excellent job preserving it.
Shadow Man Remastered is an excellent update to this classic game, but the original hasn't aged like fine wine.
This hellish remaster is stretched to raw, fibrous sinews. There is far too little variety in the weapons and enemies to make the many hour stretches of blind backtracking and incomprehensible connected-world layout anything more than a slightly dressed up chimera’s corpse. Place this in video game museums with its cult mantle and a sign above its polished noggin that reads ‘look, don’t touch’.
