Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire is a game with a lot of heart and ambition. It mildly revisits elements from JRPG classics like Skies of Arcadia while trying to bring new ideas into the fold. While the nostalgic appeal to the atmosphere, style, and gameplay has its merits, the game depends too much on it, making it a bit lackluster on many fronts.

Take to the skies in Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire, a new RPG by Octeto Studios. Taking a substantial amount of inspiration from the cult classic Dreamcast RPG Skies of Arcadia, the game certainly has its charms. Unfortunately, the experience is also weighed down by a significant number of technical issues and general mechanical clunkiness that will likely ward off all but the most tolerant of players.

Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire is the kind of unintentional retro homage where this homage itself seems to be something from the past. The cute character artwork is quite a clash with the ancient 3D world, and the tactical combat ends up being too lengthy and far from providing the excitement that these air battles could. There’s ambition for sure, and it seems like the developers are willing on improving the game, but it may be too late for that already. This is an experience that can’t be recommended as it’s clunky and not as enjoyable as the premise would suggest.
