Slender: The Arrival Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

In context, however, he is a cipher for every monster a human imagines might harm them in the dark - a role he excels at, by virtue of being able to disregard this world's rules and teleport behind the player, or alongside her, just out of sight. Slender, like all horror entertainment, is principally a game of (repeating) tricks. These include the mounting jeopardy that comes with completing the objectives one by one in each chapter (find the eight pages, activate the eight generators, close the eight windows), or in Slender Man's ability to apparate through the magic of video game code. But i...

The survival horror genre gets another gem in the form of Slender: The Arrival, one of the most terrifying games in recent memory.

If you’re looking to experience pure horror then Slender: The Arrival is one of the best games currently available. Although its gameplay mechanics are monotonous, its varied locations and constant tension throughout create a unique experience that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled. I liked that the story was non-intrusive and still left a lot of mystery with regards to the titular Slender Man, maintaining your fear of him on subsequent playthroughs. While its short length may be off-putting to some, anyone looking for a good scare would be wise to invest in this game and a...

For its asking pricing and the unique experience it offers, there's nothing quite like Slender: The Arrival. So long you're not expecting something along the puzzle-solving lines of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I can't think of many recent horror games that cause that same kind of dread you get from being alone and defenseless.

Slender: The Arrival is a must-play for any horror fan who hasn't played it on PC. You may get frustrated with it at times, but overcoming any cheap moments makes beating each chapter and the overall game all the more rewarding. If you play it alone, you can easily get enough scares out of it for price, but we highly recommend that you play The Arrival with the company of a couple of friends, turn up the volume, and turn off the lights.

Slender delivers plenty of solid jump-scares spread across the story mode, but there's far too much repetitive gameplay in between the actual action to make it worth the experience. In a campaign so unexpectedly short, the fact that repetitive gameplay becomes such a huge hurdle really says it all. Fans of Slender Man will still enjoy their experience, but those on the fence about purchasing this game are better off leaving Slender to stay out in the woods.

Nov 24, 2013 Read Review

Slender: The Arrival is more frustrating than scary. The atmospheric locations are wasted in this boring survival-horror game where players do little more than search around for numbered items. The game goes a long way to flesh out the story and mythology, but it never makes a convincing argument for why Slender deserves to be a franchise.
