Spellbreak offers a breath of life into the lungs of the battle royale genre. New battle royales have to fight hard to keep their head above the water that is infested by the titans that are Fortnite, PUBG, Warzone, and Apex Legends, but Spellbreak’s innovative gameplay might just be what the genre is looking for.

Released by developer Proletariat in September 2020, Spellbreak is a new Battle Royale multiplayer experience which allows players to conjure spells and channel the elements in order to defeat enemies. Although Spellbreak has its rough edges and is still no doubt in development, it produces a very unique Battle Royale experience which many players will find refreshing and fun.

Spellbreak is a good battle-royale with great combat. It's graphics and world-design won't "wow" anyone, but the ability to dish out devastating magical destruction in chaotic duals is unlike anything else currently on the market.

Spellbreak could be a huge hit if it was capable of filling out games with players, rather than bots. Even still, Proletariat’s fantastic sound design, music, gameplay mechanics, and art style creates a hugely immersive experience for the player; comfortably satisfying a player’s desire to experience games shaped around elemental magic. It’s a shame that such an incredibly rewarding experience is marred by bot-heavy games.

SPELLBREAK REVIEW FOR PC, PS4, XBOX ONE, AND NINTENDO SWITCH. It’s 2020 and battle royale games are still king of the video game world. Enter Spellbreak with its own unique attempt at earning a slice of the BR pie. Trading guns for spells, developer Proletariat hopes that epic battlemage combat will be its winning formula. After testing the game on PC and Nintendo Switch, I’m happy to say that this free-to-play experience is well worth a try.

Even so, Spellbreak's shortcomings at launch make it a far less compelling experience than many of the other battle royale games on the market. It will undoubtedly get better with future updates, and not only that, Spellbreak supports cross-play and is free-to-play. Battle royale fans looking for something that's a little different flavor than the military shooters that dominate the genre have no real reason not to give it a go, but they should keep their expectations in check.

Spellbreak is a fun new take on the BR genre, one that I think will differentiate itself enough away from the big hitters. The early access version that is out is surprisingly polished, and while I did have a fun time with the game, I’m more interested in seeing what they bring down the line for the map and new spells.

There are a ton of battle royal games out there but few are as family-friendly and fun-filled as Spellbreak so let's cast some spells.

Spellbreak holds vast potential and is full of depths to explore, but it’s not quite there yet, despite the 1.0 release. Sure, it’s fun enough to play if you can sit down with two of your friends and bash out a couple hours’ madness, but I forgot what the game was called once I stopped playing. With next to no lore within the game, and with every win or loss feeling the same, there's just not quite enough to make a lasting impression.

Ultimately, while there's certainly areas for improvements and avenues for Spellbreak to stand out even more from the battle royale crowd, developer Proletariat Games has put together a very commendable first effort and have put Spellbreak in a great spot early on.

Spellbreak is exactly what you want a fantasy-themed magical battle royale to be. You can soar through the skies, cast powerful spells, and combine elements to devastating effect. The combat is fast, chaotic, and absolutely epic. Playing Spellbreak is like taking control of a superhero or powerful anime character.

For a battle royale, Spellbreak feels unusually polished and special from the opening seconds. Even as the new game on the block, developer Proletariat has managed to stand out in the crowd with exciting spell-based combat, a vivid art style, and varied character classes. The single map lacks variety and cosmetics could be better, but it’s an excellent foundation to build upon as a real alternative to the over-saturation of military shooters in the battle royale genre.
