Professional reviews from gaming critics

When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.

Spellspire is a puzzle, role-playing game where you create words from a series of letters. Sounds pretty simple, but there's a lot more to it than that. Take on

On its own, Spellspire is an enjoyable word RPG, somewhat in the same vein as a Puzzle Quest. The replayable nature makes it a nice game to have on hand as a complement to the Switch’s other games. It’s a focused and fun twist on a known formula, well worth checking out if you need a break from Mario.

Spellspire is a game that knows what it is, and doesn’t aim for the stars. It’s a more than enjoyable experience worth the price tag. Those looking for a fun little game to play during downtime, or even something to distract the kids, can’t go far wrong here.

Spellspire is a mash-up of word game and action/role-playing game. Blast fiends by spelling words, and collect gold dropped by slain monsters. Buy more powerful gear, and power through tough encounters.

Games that task players with spelling words can be quite addictive if done right. Spellspire may be a simplistic take on the genre but will it cast a spell on you? Grab your magic wand and let's find out.

But I don’t want to leave you with that only gross taste in your mouth about the game. Spellspire is good enough to play for a few hours, good enough to talk about a bit, good enough to praise for the developers’ understanding of game progression… but also easy enough to forget about in a week or two when something new and shiny comes along.

Spellspire tries to offer an interesting mix of spelling games and RPGs. Unfortunately, too much of the game is left to luck, and the elemental system made to provide something less luck-based never really matters.

Perhaps most frustrating, however, is the random letter mechanic. I have yet to find a 10 letter word (for which there is a trophy) due to this feature and I have completed the main game and made a significant dent into the dungeon. I even resorted to pausing and using an online anagram finder to test how long this might take. After an hour of restarting levels, I still had not been given one board that enabled a ten letter word to be found. In this case, emphasising the puzzle element by having designed boards would have meant that every level had the internal challenge of finding the anagram...
