Star Trek: Resurgence Reviews

Star Trek: Resurgence is a modest enterprise, but Dramatic Labs did a stellar job of capturing the qualities of the show, specifically its '90s era, with all the strengths and weaknesses thereof. As with the show, technically, you may notice some rough edges, but the creators have worked wonders with their resources. The visual novel stylings here suit the material, and it's got it where it counts, with excellent writing and performances across the board. Non-Trek fans won't get half as much out of it, and you may not be tempted to go back for a second playthrough. But if the current crop of Trek shows isn't quite scratching your itch, Resurgence does a great job of transporting you back a generation.

The downside is that sometimes, being basically a Star Trek episode shoved into a video game means it suffers from video game bullshit like stealth, cover shooting, puzzles, minigames, etc. There is a story mode option where you don’t have to deal with these, but still. And there are some technical hitches and bugs and whatnot. There was an early moment I remember where it was prompting me to pull the trigger on my controller only 1. I was playing on PC and 2. I didn’t have a damn controller plugged in so 3. Wtf, GAME, what do you want from me?!

While there are some nuggets of gold within Star Trek: Resurgence's narrative, the game prioritizes tedious puzzles and clunky mechanics that break the sense of immersion that is crucial for this genre. The IP and some interesting characters are not enough to distract from the poor visuals, controls, and bugs that plague the majority of the experience.

Star Trek: Resurgence is a narrative adventure game featuring dialog choices, relationship building, and exploration. Alongside dialog-driven role playing and rich branching storylines, you will also engage with the Star Trek universe in a variety of other gameplay styles, including shuttle piloting, phaser fights, tricorder scanning, stealth, and micro-gameplay mechanics. Despite multiple graphical and audio issues, Star Trek Resurgence is worth checking out. The experience of the former Telltale employees shows in Dramatic Labs. Somehow, the engine is just as buggy, but the gripping storyline and characters shine bright. It’s also cool how dedicated the studio is to recreating the gadgets from this Star Trek era. If you’re a Trekkie or a casual fan, you should give this game a go.

With its greater emphasis on character development and more cerebral storytelling, a game like Resurgence that emphasizes diplomatic solutions and the pressures of command over standard action is perfect for the genre. It's safe to say that Star Trek has fallen out of favour when it comes to video games, with only a select handful standing out over recent years, Star Trek Online being the most obvious example. On the other hand, 2013's Star Trek also stood out for all the wrong reasons. One title I haven't been able to try but would like to is Star Trek: Bridge Crew. One thing is sure, Star Trek lends itself well to various game types, and it's time for former TellTale alums at Dramatic Labs to bring the adventure with Star Trek: Resurgence.

Dramatic Labs' narrative-driven entry in the Star Trek canon is a rocky ride, but a welcome one.

Like a lot of us, I grew up with Star Trek and its films, but it was still a little bit before my time. It wasn’t until Star Trek the Next Generation that I feel Star Trek found its true balance and identity. TNG was the port that all future Star Trek ships sailed from, including Star Trek: Resurgence.

A robust and engaging mission, Star Trek: Resurgence does the iconic sci-fi saga justice with an intriguing original storyline that slots neatly into the series' lore, offering interesting and likeable characters, choices that feel like they matter, and its fair share of twists and turns. Engage.

Filled to bursting with all the Trek-no-babble, easter eggs, in-jokes, and political intrigue you’ve come to know and love from the Next Generation era of Trek, Resurgence hits all the right notes, even if it does play it a bit safe. Now if we can just get the rest of the Tribbles out of Jeffries tubes…

Resurgence is one of the best Star Trek stories out there, but it's brought down by clumsy gameplay and pointless padding.

Can Telltale alumni transport us back to where no man has gone before, or is this another loveless riff on popular scifi’s heyday?

Any Star Trek fan is going to enjoy this, and it might even turn narrative adventure fans into Trekkies!

If you're a Star Trek fan looking for a game that respects the series enough to get the details right, then as a Vulcan might say, Resurgence is the most logical choice. It has an intriguing narrative that takes the risk of having two protagonists and plenty of difficult choices for you to make. However, some of the overcomplicated mini-games and melodramatic cutscenes mar the last third of the game. While Resurgence isn’t a technical marvel by any means, you don't need a lot of bells and whistles to tell a decent story. And I'm willing to settle for that.

Star Trek: Resurgence has an enjoyable story in a beloved universe but is bogged down by outdated mechanics and visuals in a genre that others have shown can be vastly improved.
