Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War is brief but unforgettable, its humour carrying it beyond the limits of its retro-shooter roots.
The enduring popularity of the Starship Troopers franchise, initially a book series which then became a misunderstood movie released in 1997, is fascinating to me. The movie (as well as its cheap sequels) was wrongfully considered to be fascist propaganda back in the day, even though it was as obvious of a satire as your average Family Guy episode. It spawned a pretty sizeable multimedia universe, considering its flopped box office earnings, including a game I reviewed last year, a decent but...
Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War captures the feel of the sci-fi classic perfectly, and is just good old fashioned FPS fun.
Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War is a fun shooter with a fantastic presentation. It doesn't do anything major or push the genre forward, but it provides a fun, entertaining experience with one of the more memorable franchises on the market.
Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is a fun shooter that relies on old-school gameplay mechanics paired with a more modern game structure, paired with a fun B-movie-styled campaign with excellent pacing.
Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! does a few things, and it does those things very well. You may find other shooters out there with more bells and whistles, but if you have been waiting for the immersive fascist Starship Troopers experience, Ultimate Bug War! is that game.
Starship Troopers Ultimate Bug War | Review | Ready to join the space infantry and defeat those hated bugs?
Ready to squash in this meta retro shooter game within a game? Or do you prefer taking the side of the insects? Here, you can do both!
If you want to shoot a bunch of bugs, cause a ton of explosions and watch some genuinely funny cutscenes all through the lens of an in-universe highly propagandized video game, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! might just be for you. While it has its flaws (namely, squad gameplay, objective variety, and the Bug mode), it's entertaining to say the least.
A retro-styled first-person shooter, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is excellently presented with live-action sequences that are genuinely funny. Unfotunately, it's let down by repetitive mission design and just isn't as much fun to play as it should be, with its third-person bug missions being particularly bland.
The Starship Troopers franchise has always been a strangely neglected one. The original novel and movie are stone cold classics, the latter in particular skewering the propaganda and marketing of warfare and xenophobia in a way that regrettably continues to be culturally relevant decades after their release. However, aside from some straight-to-DVD level sequels and a number of less than stellar gaming forays, the legacy has never really been continued. Of course, Helldivers 2 has very much filled that gap, taking the look, feel, and satirical approach and turning it into a huge success, but n...
It was, and still is, really common for people to think of a film and say, ‘That would make a great video game.’ It was the bedrock of the video game industry for most of its existence, for better or (mostly) worse. It became something of an assumption, maybe even a joke, that video games based on films were bad…but then something changed.
