All in all, Starship Troopers Ultimate Bug War sits nicely next to the EDF series as a parody of militarism in video games. EDF does it by embracing B-grade aesthetics and bonkers attitude, where Starship Troopers instead builds on the film to deliver something sharp and more pointed. It’s sad that this game is just so intensely relevant right now, but that is the world we live in. As a satire, Starship Troopers Ultimate Bug War isn’t particularly funny, because it’s increasingly our reality.

Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War combines nostalgia with tried-and-true first-person shooter mechanics and gameplay. The way it puts the player into infomercial-like military propaganda serves as neat window dressing, and the number of difficulty and control options, including Switch 2 Joy-Con mouse mode, make for a fairly customizable experience. If you want to shoot a bunch of bugs, cause a ton of explosions and watch some genuinely funny cutscenes all through the lens of an in-universe highly propagandized video game, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! might just be for you. While it has its flaws (namely, squad gameplay, objective variety, and the Bug mode), it's entertaining to say the least.
A retro-styled first-person shooter, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is excellently presented with live-action sequences that are genuinely funny. Unfotunately, it's let down by repetitive mission design and just isn't as much fun to play as it should be, with its third-person bug missions being particularly bland.
The Starship Troopers franchise has always been a strangely neglected one. The original novel and movie are stone cold classics, the latter in particular skewering the propaganda and marketing of warfare and xenophobia in a way that regrettably continues to be culturally relevant decades after their release.
