There's always something enjoyable about a wonderful swashbuckling adventure. Can Thunderful Games' SteamWorld Heist II stand up to the deepest ocean depths or does it crash against the reef?

There are few companies that are known to deliver a good game. But one of them is certainly the Swedish studio Image & Form, which has been treating us to productions from its original world of humor and steam for years. SteamWorld Heist 2 confirms this rule.

When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.

SteamWorld Heist 2 is an interesting return to a style Thunderful hasn’t re-explored in years, and it’s a decently polished one at that. The multi-job character progress and new upgrades to sea travel make for an improved approach to new and varied challenges throughout the game. The upgrades aren’t watertight against the issues that poked holes in the first game such as inconvenient travel and grinding. That said, if you’re looking for a solid tactical strategy game, SteamWorld Heist 2 is a charming voyage that should provide plenty of good times to fans of the SteamWorld universe.

SteamWorld Heist 2 invites us back into a steampunk universe of mechanised mayhem, now set against the backdrop of the swashbuckling Great Sea. As Captain Quincy Leeway, players must navigate treacherous waters, strategise ricochet shots, and manage a diverse crew of Steambots in a quest to uncover the mystery behind a deadly water crisis. After releasing a city-building spinoff with SteamWorld Build last year, Heist 2 proves Thunderful Games can still strike gold with this series.

SteamWorld Heist II innovates on what made SteamWorld Heist 1 great, with some stumbling around its open-world design.

Despite SteamWorld Heist II's shortcomings, it's a fun and polished game. It does, however, suffer from repetition and lack of depth, so it feels like you've seen all it has to offer after a few hours.

My main issue with the title was the regenerating enemy types that show up later on.  They were not nearly as fun to fight as the main antagonists and I ended up lowering the difficulty to normal to take them head-on. It’s a Play Anywhere game on Xbox, which means you get it on console & PC if you purchase it there as well. As one of the better handheld games I’ve played that is a huge bonus.

That it does all that without compromising its strategic depth is a feat in itself, and its unique 2D take on the genre further entrenches it as a one-of-a-kind experience. SteamWorld Heist II’s great tactical battles and sense of humor make it hard to imagine anyone not being won over by it, whether you’re a fan of strategy games or not.

SteamWorld Heist II is a turn-based strategy action game brimming with character. A game most players can find enjoyment in, either through the combat or narrative. Fine tune the gameplay to fit your playstyle, as experimentation is encouraged. Join the crew of Captain Leeway as you root for him to overcome his one insecurities. This is a simple but fun game, and it's a fine addition to the SteamWorld universe.

SteamWorld Heist 2 is a great sequel. While retaining the aiming system and side-on perspective that made the original a joy, it features a generously redesigned class system and new overworld to explore. However, old problems with mission repetition and stingy XP rewards deter you from experimenting with classes, pulling the game down from excellence.

The core of SteamWorld Heist still burns brightly in this turn-based tactics sequel, but its bid to go bigger and better is a risk that hasn't quite paid off.

SteamWorld Heist 2 is an incredible sequel that refines the turn-based combat and is quite addicting, especially when playing on the Steam Deck.
