Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is a fantastic RPG. The story is interesting, the characters are unique, the quests are varied, and the systems run deep. There are a variety of different ways to play this game and I can’t wait to jump back in and explore some new paths. This is one nightmare I highly recommend.

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones by Cultic Games is an exploratory game that is brave enough to take the player down an uncomfortable journey into Lovecraft’s mind.

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is one of those games you will love and hate at the same time – you just have to like the dense climate of Lovecraft's mythology and, like me, bear all the glitches that make completing the game neigh impossible.
For every great quest and interesting or horrifying reveal, you have a battle sequence that’s drawn out and can, quite often, have you reloading an older save as characters die because of constantly missing attacks or being unable to fathom which items would have helped them survive. It’s one of the worst cases of self-sabotage I’ve seen this year and one that’s a major caveat to an RPG I otherwise would have no trouble recommending.
Cosmic horror and more specifically, games based on HP Lovecrafts novels, have been making a grand return. With Call of Cthulhu, Sinking City, and the upcoming Moons of Madness being the most noticeable recent additions. Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is the latest attempt at a Lovecraftian RPG, with some seriously mixed results.
Hardcore RPG enthusiasts, get ready for a trip to a dark and dismal Arkham to explore a great emulation of everything Lovecraftian horror has to offer. Cultic Games has crafted an entertaining narrative, but inexcusably dropped the ball in one major way.
