It’s incredibly good to have the Suikoden franchise back in orbit with the recently released Suikoden I&II HD Remaster. This is not only because it’s the first thing Konami has done with the series in over a decade. Playing this compilation of two classic RPGs for review, I initially wondered why the themes and vibes of the games felt timeless and needed today. Before long, it struck me why it’s such a timely release.

In spite of all my grievances, these are still two classic RPGs. Suikoden I&II are enormous adventures full of interesting characters to recruit, and epic plots to discover. To be perfectly clear, my final score reflects these games as remasters for a modern audience rather than as games in isolation. I loved the new sprites, and the levels do look better than ever before (even if the aesthetic saddens me). I wish more mechanics had been modernized more than anything else. The way the visuals and the sound design have been upgraded also ensures that the games get the care and attention to detail that keep the series’ legend alive. The hope is that renewed interest in Suikoden will eventually give Konami no choice but to invest strongly in a new entry, but at the very least, longtime fans have something new to look forward to and cherish as they bring the fight to Emperor Barbarossa and Luca Blight.

Back in the late 90s, after releasing some amazing games like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, Squaresoft was the undisputed king of Japanese role-playing games. The publisher's dominance in the genre, however, did not stop other Japanese publishers known for releasing some absolute bangers in other genres from launching their own takes on the genre, like Konami, which released the first entry in the Suikoden series back in late 1995 in Japan. I’ve only ever known the Suikoden series as the JRPG where you can recruit like a hundred different characters. I always loved the idea of that whenever I heard it, but the closest I came to actually playing them was with being tempted by the recently released spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.
