Super Mario Maker is a great way to mark Mario’s 30th birthday, but it’s not concerned with being an overwrought history lesson. Instead, it’s a celebration that folds three decades of Mario into one accessible, powerful creation suite. The perpetual joke at the end of every 10 Mario Challenge run informing you that the Princess is in yet another castle hints at Super Mario Maker’s bigger promise: There will always be more levels to play thanks to the online creation community, and a virtually endless pool of challenges to overcome.
Super Mario Maker is a fantastic creation tool. Just don't expect it to be much more than that.
Super Mario Maker stands on its own because of its easy to use creation tools. Sharing a self-made level is a blast, and watching criticism and kudos pour in from other players is genuinely satisfying thanks to moderation from the Big N. Still, the lack of checkpoints can prove to be brutal in some of the more challenging worlds, and the inclusion of co-operative play would have made building and playing through these levels feel a lot more like a team exercise than a solo affair. Super Mario Maker is a charming little creation tool, and I’m sure fans will come up with some amazing levels for years to come. However, it feels a bit more constrained than it needs to be, and is in dire need of updates or DLC to keep it going long term.
For thirty long years we have been partaking in the adventures of the portly plumber, across both three dimensions and the basic two we have been through some great adventures. However, over these thirty years we have also grown tired of the levels that the basic Mario experience provides, there are still some great levels across Mario’s history but we needed better, something more refreshing. To fix this tiresome issue Nintendo has brought us the idea which will change Mario for the better, with the ability to create our own Mario levels.
