Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Tales of Vesperia was one of the best JRPGs last gen, and Definitive Edition is easily one of the best JRPGs this gen.
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition shows its age in some areas, but with its enjoyable characters, interesting story, beautiful aesthetic and fun combat, this is one game from 2008 that definitely still holds up in 2019.
Tales is one of the longest-running JRPG franchises around, seeing countless entries on any number of systems over the last 24 years. While there are plenty of quality Tales titles, there are a few that easily stand out from the pack, like Tales of Vesperia. For years now, fans have been begging for a western release of Vesperia PS3 version, which never released outside of Japan.
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is well worth your time, the story and in particular the characters are some of the most fleshed out and unique individuals that you can’t help but grow attached to. The flashy yet deep combat system enhances what is already a fantastic JRPG. Any fan of the genre needs to check this out.
Like many other series, the Tales series has had its fair share of great and not-so-great games in the franchise, and Tales of Vesperia is undoubtedly one of the better ones. Originally released in English for the Xbox 360, the PS3 port with full voice acting and additional characters only released in Japan. Now over 10 years since the original release, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition brings one of the best JRPGs from the last generation to all contemporary platforms.
The Tales series by Bandai Namco made its big breakthrough in the West with Tales of Symphonia, originally released on Nintendo GameCube before getting ported to PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PC with added content. The former GameCube exclusive was the first entry in the series to sport full 3D graphics and, as such, it better resonated with Western audiences who, by 2003, had largely left 2D games behind. While the 3D formula was introduced by Tales of Symphonia, it was with Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Vesperia, that it got refined to new heights. Despite the advancements, however, Ban...
Tales of Vesperia; Definitive Edition is a charming game with a great cast, a fun, deep combat system, and a ton of heart and easily the best iteration of a beloved classic.
When the topic of classic Japanese role-playing games is brought up, people tend to focus on a set few titles. Final Fantasy VII will forever be etched into the history of the genre for obvious reasons -- as is the case with several other entries in Square Enix's beloved series -- and most would probably give nods to properties like Dragon Quest, Suikoden, Breath of Fire, and specific titles such as Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. All of these games are considered classics for a reason, but only every so often does Bandai Namco's long running Tales franchise enter the conversation.
Any JRPG fan who missed Tales of Vesperia the first time around shouldn't hesitate to check out this definitive edition of the title. Despite its age, the game still holds up in 2019.
Nevertheless, though, Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition excels in the places that matter most to Tales game, and in doing so earns the timeless adulation lavished on it by its fans. I can’t tell you if it’s the best Tales game, but it’s everything a Tales game needs to be, in order to be considered great.
It’s a huge relief to find that Tales of Vesperia hasn’t just aged well, but continues to prove itself to be amongst the best games in the Tales series. The enhancements made to the Definitive Edition tidy up and expand on an already enjoyable game, bringing the characters to life more effectively than ever before and making it more than capable of enthralling both returning players and newcomers alike.
What was once great then, is now simply good on the balance of things. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition‘s story can still firmly hold your attention despite the occasional lull, and there’s enough content to keep any JRPG fan happy. But the combat will remind you that this is a game not of this age; it’s still functional, just no longer particularly enjoyable. Let’s not forget the game’s biggest draw for Tales fans though: fully voiced dialogue and the chance to get to grips with content that previously hasn’t been available in the west. Those certainly don’t disappoint. This is indeed th...
