The Alliance Alive HD Remastered Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
I love The Alliance Alive HD for so many reasons that the laughably simple gameplay was a non-issue. The characters are vibrant, the world is fascinating to explore, the aesthetics are gorgeous, and the game perfectly straddles that line between indulging in nostalgia and modernising what it needs to to retain relevance. It’s the kind of game that looks like it would be easy to dismiss or overlook as being something too indebted to yesteryear, but in truth it deserves much greater respect than that.
If nothing else, the Nintendo Switch has proven that it's a great platform for ports and remasters and now, you can finally enjoy 2018's 3DS gem The Alliance Alive on the console.
The Alliance Alive HD Remastered may only offer a visual upgrade over its original release but it's great storyline and solid mechanics make it a great RPG for those looking for something a bit more old-school.
The Alliance Alive is a JRPG that merges old-school RPG gameplay with modern aesthetics.
The Switch is slowly shaping up to become the single best JRPG platform of all time. You’ve got everything from old-school classics like Final Fantasy VII and the original Dragon Quest trilogy, to more modern bangers like Ni No Kuni, Octopath Traveler and Ys VIII. You need to thank NIS America for publishing a good chunk of these JRPGs for the system. Their latest release is The Alliance Alive HD, a remaster of a 3DS game released last year, and I’d be lying if I told I had heard of it pr...
If a classic JRPG is what you’re looking for, The Alliance Alive HD delivers most of what you could want, if little else. With a few tweaks to the JRPG formula, a likeable cast of occasionally dumb characters, and some interesting combat mechanics, it’s not exactly breaking the mould, but it’s doing a pretty good job of filling it.
The Alliance Alive has been given a second chance with this HD remaster. It is another great addition to the existing JRPG library of the Nintendo Switch.
Even knowing that the only change of the new remastered version of Alliance Alive is the graphics, I still had high hopes for a better second experience. Some of the individual aspects I enjoyed, but as a full experience it still didn’t click. If you picked up Alliance Alive the first time around, whatever that experience was for you will likely be repeated on the Switch. To those whose main interest is the battle system, if grinding for moves and abilities is your thing, this remastered is a much prettier and convenient version to play.
I was excited by the opportunity to try The Alliance Alive again when NIS America announced they were re-releasing for the Switch. Having now played through the HD remaster, I kind of wish I’d just completed the original 3DS version.Read More
It’s clear from looking at The Alliance Alive HD Remastered that it used to be a 3DS game. The chibi character design makes everyone look like toddlers with swords. There is no voice acting, even in pre-rendered subtitled scenes. Every menu and interface is too big. An effort was made to update the textures, but it’s still obvious that this is an HD game that was not made for HD.
