The Guided Fate Paradox

The Guided Fate Paradox may not have the most engrossing story, and at times, it can roll at a snails pace when in full swing, but its overall attention to the little things is what makes it one of this year’s surprises. You’ll die, you’ll cry, you may even reboot some saves ad nauseam, but that’s the sadistic charm of a great roguelike — a game that may not be for everyone, but one that offers enough addictive carnage for veterans and newcomers alike.

A solid addition to the NIS family that roguelike fans have not seen since Azure Dreams on the PS1. Lots of depth and replayability, but a few unexpected surprises like unusually poor voice acting dull the shine.

The Guided Fate Paradox starts incredibly slowly. Tutorials hold your hand for the first hour, with only a mere sliver of actual gameplay putting in an appearance. Even when it's over, there's still more to learn, although these intricacies are thankfully taught through a staggered approach over time. This initial phase is also thick with dialogue and exposition, which introduces the majority of the cast, explains the strange setting, and prepares you for the task at hand. The Guided Fate Paradox suffers from uneven difficulty and customization that could charitably be called "byzantine," but it manages to overcome many of these flaws with its over-the-top sense of humor and rewarding strategy. Though it's often unforgiving, it's a good RPG, and a fine addition to the PlayStation 3 library.
