The Last Hero of Nostalgaia

It's not everyday you see a refreshing approach on the Souls-like genre, especially one that doesn't take itself too seriously. The Last Hero of Nostalgaia does just that, putting you into the pixelated boots of a bundle of sticks on a mission to restore the entire world of video games. Developer Over The Moon does a fantastic job wrapping what we all know and love about Dark Souls with a layer of satirical flare and video game history. If you can get past some frustrating design choices and janky keyboard controls, then you're in for a nostalgic treat.

All in a great take on the Soulslike staples we've already seen flood the market. This jaunt through a retro dullscape might feel oddly uninspiring if it wasn't for the streamlined gameplay and acerbic wit wielded by Nostalgaia.

Despite a few shortcomings, it is a decent indie soulslike with an unconventional story and surprisingly competent combat.

With Souls-like bones resting at its core, does The Last Hero of Nostalgaia push the genre to new heights? Not really. But there is some good stuff in there. With the world that links all video game worlds on the brink of blinking out of existence, it'll take one pixelated monstrosity to restore the source and save the world of Nostalgaia. Just, ya know, try not to die too much.

As Soulslikes go, The Last Hero of Nostalgaia certainly boasts a neat hook on account of its smugly cynical narrative and frequent bouts of cheeky humour. However, the occasionally imprecise combat, uninteresting enemies and worlds coupled with a raft of frustrating bugs and a general lack of polish all serve to commit The Last Hero of Nostalgaia to an oblivion of mediocrity.

This title definitely blends comedy and action quite nicely!
