There’s nothing wrong with wave shooters, archery titles, and/or the occasional flying sim. They are genres tailor made for virtual reality, especially if
Although The Mage’s Tale isn’t a new tale, it does find a fresh audience on PSVR. And for that, I am very thankful. The Mage’s Tale was originally developed and published by inXile Entertainment in a partnership with Oculus VR back in June of 2017. It’s an old-school role-playing dungeon crawler at its best.
Ever dream of being able to launch fireballs out of your hand? inXile's VR sorcery game has finally made its way over to consoles. Read our The Mage's Tale PS4 review to see if it was a clean transition.
The Mage's Tale is a dungeon-crawling action-RPG set between the events of The Bard’s Tale III: Thief of Fate and The Bard’s Tale IV.
The Mage’s Tale represents an early experiment for VR RPGs — a minor milestone. There’s still a long way to go until people are “jacked-in” for hours at a time a la Sword Art Online, but with projects like this leading the way we’ll get there sooner than later.
Despite its initial allure, The Mage’s Tale just didn’t connect with me in the long run. PSVR has some incredibly high notes, and some pretty low lows, and this game sits comfortably in the middle. It doesn’t do anything exceptionally well, and its shortcomings are somewhat tied to the shortcomings of the format it’s presented on. The Mage’s Tale has some great elements, but the whole of the experience left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.
