The Prisoning: Fletcher’s Quest is a bizarre and humorous game that traps you inside the subconscious of a burnt-out game developer. It is very challenging and rewarding at the same time.
The Prisoning: Fletcher's Quest is exactly as it presents itself. It wants to be more, but I wish it didn't think it had to be. It's regular retro platforming, with a good map, checkpoints, forgettable characters, and cool bosses. It's something to do. You'll probably play it twice, but that's twice the something to do.
The chunky pixel art looks fantastic, faithfully capturing the spirit of the ’90s in this homage to the era. While there are some inconsistencies in character design, the game still looks great overall. However, it’s the funky chiptune soundtrack that truly elevates the presentation. Remarkably, each zone has a catchy tune that will linger in your head long after the credits roll.
You can’t go through half a steam store page without tripping over a Metroidvania. Lots of great experiences to be had exploring wide ranging maps with hard stop gates you can only cross once you get that next special ability. The Prisoning: Fletcher’s Quest decided to step in that pond but stayed in the shallow end of map travel. There’s some comedy that oversteps the bounds of where my humor lies. You can tell that a medium has reached some form of maturity once things start getting meta and titles appear that draw attention to the process of being constructed and the dilemmas that are faced by their creators.
